•The BOE held a budget
hearing and heard from cit
izens concerned about the
proposed tax increase.
•Erin Gathercoal was
named the new city clerk in
Baldwin.
•State leaders met in
Banks County to hear from
county leaders about the ef
fort to move out of the Pied
mont Judicial Circuit.
•Carissa McFadden was
named the new chief deputy
at the Banks County Sher
iff’s Office following the re
tirement of Shawn Wilson.
•BCHS began offering an
after school program to help
students stay on track and
graduate.
SEPTEMBER
•Thousands attended Ho
mer’s annual Labor Day
festival.
•A training complex
opened at the sheriff’s office
features a rappel tower and
shooting range.
•Banks County Sheriff’s
Office deputy Joe Williams
was struck while directing
school traffic.
•A Homer boy, Dawson
Britt, and his mother, Re
nee, were feature in a na
tional report on a new de
vice to detect autism.
•A high speed chase that
turned into a foot chase end
ed in two arrests and the re
covery of a stolen vehicle.
•Addison Hoard was
crowned Homecoming
Queen at BCHS.
•The BOC lifted the hir
ing freeze in order to hire
an assistant road superinten
dent.
•The BOC hired a new
firm, Rushton and Compa
ny, to do the annual audit.
•Spectrum moved for
ward with plans to offer
a broadband expansion in
Banks County.
OCTOBER
•Former Alto council
member Carolyn Cabe died.
•A fire in Lula destroyed
a chicken house and killed
20,000 chickens.
•The 56{sup}th{/sup}
annual Maysville Autumn
Leaf Festival was held.
•Seven cases of rabies
were reported in county,
which is the second highest
number in the state.
•The Lula City Council
approved water and sewer
increases.
•A Homer Pumpkin Festi
val was held.
•Early voting started for
the November town elec
tions.
•Erik Keith was named
to fill a vacant seat on the
Baldwin City Council.
•It was announced that
nightly lane closures would
be held to install the median
at Banks Crossing.
•The BOC was split on a
request to pay for half of the
cost of locating a water line
on the property of a new vet
clinic. The issues failed in a
3-2 vote.
•Taylor Griffith was re
appointed to serve on the
Banks County Planning
Commission.
•It was announced that the
roundabout planned in Ho
mer would be constructed in
2024.
•The Lula City Council
turned down a zoning re
quest to change a 16.9-acre
piece of property at the site
of the hatchery.
•The Gillsville City
Council applied for a grant
to construct a new down
town city park.
•A health fair was held in
Homer.
NOVEMBER
•Kipp Jackson was named
the District Teacher of the
Year.
•The Lula Ladies held a
community dinner to honor
local veterans.
•Richard Presley was
re-elected to serve as mayor
of Maysville. In the Ward 4
city council race, Brodriche
Jackson was elected.
•In the Baldwin town
election, Stephanie Almag-
no was the winner.
•In Alto, Patricia Armour
was the winner in the may
or’s race. In the Lula city
Council District 4 race,
incumbent Garnett Smith
won. In the District 5 race,
Juliette Talley was the win
ner.
•Kelsey Barnes was
named Banks County Elec
tion Supervisor to replace
Andra Phagan, who is retir
ing.
•Jay Reid resigned as head
football coach at BCHS.
•The City of Baldwin
hosted a groundbreaking
for the new Public Works
Building on Industrial Park
Road.
•Carolyn Murray received
the Pioneer in Education
Award.
•A new Dollar General
store opened in Homer.
•The BOC approved a re
quest from the sheriff to lo
cate “flock cameras” in the
county.
•Medlink opened a new
facility in the county.
DECEMBER
•Banks Cold Storage
broke ground on the con
struction of a 210,620
square foot facility on Hwy.
59.
•The BCSO K9 team is
ranked third in the nation
for finds.
•The BCHS basketball
court was dedicated to Kan
dy Parks.
•Banks County schools
received a grant to be used
for agricultural education
initiatives.
•Banks County Elementa
ry School students received
coats through the Operation
Warm Coat program.
•The Lula City Council
voted to oust council mem
ber Gene Bramlett from of
fice after holding a hearing
on the matter.
•Christmas festivities
were held in Homer, Lula,
Gillsville, Baldwin and
Maysville.
•Banks County REACH
Scholars were named.
•Danny Maxwell was
appointed to again serve as
chairman of the BOC.
•The Gillsville City
Council set venue fees for
the Frankum Building.
•Jaemor Farm founder
Jimmy Echols died at age
87.
•The Homer Town Coun
cil approved a rezoning re
quest from Doug Allen to
operate Scale’s Garage in
the city.
