New site needed for
Banks Jackson Food Bank
The Banks Jackson Food Bank has outgrown its location
at 111 Atlanta Avenue in Commerce and is seeking a new
location in Commerce.
The Banks Jackson Food Bank has been in operation in
Commerce since 1982 and regularly serves over 30 fami
lies each day that it is open. This is over 300 families each
month. The food bank has served as many as 1,600 in one
month and provides approximately 5,500 pounds of food
each month.
The present location has served for over 20 years and is
too small for the present needs of the Banks and Jackson
communities. Due to the small size of the building, the staff
at the food bank is unable to obtain and store some foods.
Along with the small size of the building, the floors are
unstable and unsafe due to years of rotting wood and ter
mite damage.
Pastor Jeff Cain of Commerce Presbyterian Church re
cently volunteered to crawl under the present building with
a hammer and boards to repair the most recent hole which
appeared in the floor.
The food bank leaders are seeking a building lot or lot
with a building at least 60 feet by 60 feet with adequate
parking for eight to 10 vehicles.
The Banks Jackson Food Bank is a non-profit organiza
tion which has been funded by local people, churches and
businesses since 1982. The food bank continues to seek
volunteers for stacking and storing food as well as financial
donations to continue to meet the needs of the community.
The food bank operates on Mondays and Fridays from
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
For more information, call food bank manager Danny
Akers at 706-202-0635.
