Life lessons
This week I’m celebrating another
birthday. I learned a life lesson early
on from my dad. He always says he
is blessed that God gave him another
year of life, and I totally agree.
With each passing day, there are al
ways life lessons. Sometimes we learn
them in time to put them in action, and
other times, we have important advice
to seize the moment.
This past weekend was full of les
sons. We started out on Friday remem
bering my mom who would have been
sherry
lewis
87, but she left us way to soon. I was lucky enough to be
at Zach’s house, and I celebrated with my grands, Nate,
Rylee, and Harlow.
It was a sweet, old-fashioned summer day. We turned
off the television; we put down all our devices, and played
outside.
Rylee made Mama Gert a cake out of sand and put small
sticks on it for candles; Nate made the vanilla ice cream
with chocolate syrup, and we sang Happy Birthday. I wish
my mom was here to see all the fanfare! She would have
loved it, but more importantly, she would love, love, love
her grands. I know she would treat them with great love
and continually be the role model that she always was for
my brother, Keith, and myself.
My life lesson from this is to always remember where
we come from. God placed us in a particular family; we
should keep the memories of our loved ones alive from
generation to generation.
Next we had the opportunity to watch my granddaugh
ter Rylee in a dance recital. It is so important to give our
children and grandchildren opportunities to flourish in one
thing or another.
I know people who are excellent in sports; they didn’t
start when they were in high school. Their parents most
likely started them at an early age. I’ve sat through many
basketball and baseball games, and wrestling matches with
my children. Now I am blessed by our Heavenly Father,
to sit and watch my grand children find their way to what
they love.
Next, I’ve been reminded to live life and be for having
fun. Yes! I do love to hang out at home, but I’ll jump in
a car for a day trip; I’ve hopped on a plane for a 24 hour
impromptu trip, and I’ll get on a boat for a ride with friends
or to sail from island to island. God has blessed me; I’ve
looked at some beautiful sights during my lifetime; I know
He is the one who gave me the resources, time, and oppor
tunities to make this happen.
As of late, I have also learned the importance of taking
some time just for me. At times, I need a break; it’s okay to
sleep in and it’s okay to have a very easy meal for dinner.
It’s just as important to revitalize myself and more impor
tantly, to spend time with the Lord. Don’t; feel guilty. In
the midst of all of these precious moments, carve out some
time. I’ve found out it will help me to be a better person
for those around me.
Lastly, I’ve been reminded to cherish each and every
moment God gives to me. We are not promised tomorrow,
but if I can sit in a swing with my grandchildren or watch
“Little House of the Prairie,” it is not a waste of time, but
teaching them the importance of relationships.
Again, I praise God for another year and the beautiful
life He has chosen for me. I am excited about the oppor
tunities that lie ahead. He’s a great God and He is the one
who is in charge.
