Mr. W. II. Thompson, thn pilot of tho
Julia St. Clair, was killed lust ufternoon
about 8$ o'clock. He arrived in the city
yeatorday morning on tho boat, and at
noon was quite sober. His death occurred
at the houso of Mrs. Ed mar Tompkins,
which is located down town.
Coroner dcGrnffenreid held an inquest
ovi^r the body. Captain William Davis
foreman of tho jury. Two colored
persons, Henry Davis and ,
ere among tho seven members.
It Rooms that at tho lime of tho occur
rence only Mrs. Tompkins and tho de-
eDscd were in the house. Her evidence
ras about this:
Thompson sent me down Homo fish and
imid he would dine with mu. Ho did not
coino until uftor the M. «t G. train went
out. He topped at tho back door and I
lot biui in. Asked why bo did not enter
tho front door. Replied ho come from
back street. Saw ho was affoctod by
liquor. Ho said bo bad been to St. Clair's,
(ho was away; bought a bottle of liquor
and taken sovoral drinks. Told him that
would bring him into trouble. Said bo
did not cure for bis life and talked about
killing, and drew and cocked a pistol,
which ho flourished. Tried to tako it
away from him. Wo lmd a tusslo. I
was so excited fearing for my own life,
that 1 cannot tell how loug it was. At
one time I took tho pistol from him, but
ho seized it a^ain.
I think tho pistol was discharged twice.
Can’t tell intervals between shots. 1 did
not think ho was wounded. I screamed, for
help iu room and also at front and back
door, Thompson walked to tlio hall
and leaned against door post of room op
posite one where wo tussled. As I
screamed for help at back door ho said
“Pin not hurt,” and immediately after
dropped slowly to the floor, anddiedshort-
ly after Miss Dexter came. 1 was not mad
nor was bo. I was scared. I thought
after ho fell ho was fooling. I sent for
aid ns soon as I could. Hu never spoke
after ho fell. Tho pistol and his watch,
which had been pulled out iu tho scufllo,
were left on tho hod.
Policeman Forau testified ho came on
being sent for. Thompson did not spouk
after I came. Found watch and pistol
on bed. Mrs. Tompkins told me whore
they were. [Pistol was shown. It is a
small five-barrel Colt. Two chambers
wero empty. Mr. Clapbutu idouti-
tied it as olio Thompson lmd at lJaio-
bridgo lust Sunday. It had boon given
him by policeman Wood.J
Miss Mary Dixon, who lives iu adjoin
ing lot, heard two shots and Mrs. T.'s
erios for help. Came over. Thompson
looked as if lie would speak, and could
not.
Mrs. Dixon testified to bonriug the
abuts.
A negro woman ouiployod on tho lot
was across tho street, and heard no shots.
Went for aid whon Mrs. T. callod to her
to do so.
Roily was oxumiuod. Tho hall entered
tho left breast about tlio hourt, passed
completely through the breast, and was
found next to the undershirt, near the
right nipple. Tho other hall was found to
have passed through a door.
Jury brought in a verdict that
ceased cauio to his douth from tho dis
charge of a pistol iu a tustlo with Mrs.
Palmar Tompkins, whilst she was trying
to tnkc it from him."
Thompson was about 48 years of ago
and was considered the bust pilot on our
river. Most of his life has been passed
on the stream. Diroctly aftor.tbo war
during a whole season ho received $1,000
to $55,000 per month, but lie spent it.
His only relatives are u stopuiottor and
half brothers. Ills wife died noiuo years

received and heartily endorsed by almost
every intelligent planter in this section,
and that I mny bo compensated iu a meas

I do from this date establish the price at

this change, I do hereby agree to re

he is not fully satisfied with the invest

The problem to l>e solved by the South
