Tbe testi mony would close the oaae were it not for the letters written by Mr. Beecher aad Mra. Tilton. We hare analyaed these letters, and aotil we bare Mr. Beeoher'a promiaed explanation of tbem we can only arrive at one conclusion—that their autboisbip makes it impossible for him to remain longer in Plymouth ohurch aa a teacher ef morals and religion. Nor do we see how snoh an explanation can be made. That, however, is with Mr. Beecher, and until he baa the final oppor tunity it would be unjust for ns to pass a final opinion. A day or two after we have Mr. Moulton, a third saint, armed with a loaded pistol, compelling the pas tor to return the letter. We wonder that so little attention has been paid to this loaded pistol, for tbe story ia one of the most dramatic, aa it seems to be one of the most anthentio, incidents in the drama. Why does not the Plymouth champion of musoular Christianity ex plain this memorable interview ? What did he mean to gain by tbe loaded pis tol ? Wbat was tbe inducement that led him to go thus armed into the presenas of Mr. Beecher t Did he warn Mr. Beecher of bis weapon ? Had Mr. Beeoh- er any intimation that tbe Plymontb saint was armed ? And supposing Mr. Beeoher bad not returned tbe paper given him by Mrs. Tilton wbat use would the godly Moulton have made of his pistol 7 It would naturally seem that Mr. Beeoh er would have oalled another polioeman and sent bis Christian antagonist to the station-house to answer the obsrge of carrying couoaaled weapone, just as soon as the saints beforementioned had been tried for the utteranoe of a threatening blaokmailing letter. There would have been an explosion and disclosures, to be sure ; but wbat a different attitude Mr. Beeober wonld have held from what he bolds now ! On tbe oontrary, he enters into a covenant witb those who menaced him with ruin; according to a fourth saint—tbe saintly Carpenter—he offered to divide bis fortune and fame witb one •f tbem, and be dictatee a letter to an other in which he wishes he was dead. Whether tbe pious Moulton had tbe pistol in bis pocket or not when he noted aa the amanuensis of the act of degradation and shame, does not appear in any aooesaible narrative of these pruoeedings. Bnt Mr. Beeober does not seem to have had the feelings natural to a man who had been thus menaced and humiliated, for within a few weeks he thus apostrophises bis Christian associate: “Maoy, many friends has God raised up to me, but to no one of them has He ever given the opportunity and tbe wisdom so to serve me as you have.” ‘‘His band it was that tied up the storm that was ready to burst upon onr heads.” How far Mr. Beecher’s confi dence in tbe one friend of bis life still continues it would be curious to know, especially as we read in the letter of oon- trition these lines: “In trust with F. D. Moulton. ” “I have trusted this to Moul ton in confidence." Anywhere outside of Plymouth church the possession of a let ter so shielded wonld have been a tract aa Baored as death. But one of the accept ed phases of this extraordinary manifes tation of religion, morals and honor is that no one has questioned the possession by Mr. Tilton of a letter “trusted to Moulton in confidence." We should think Mr. Moulton wonld so far break bis rale of silence aa to illustrate this point. Whatever this investigation may deter mine, it will be sure that before any other of tbia holy man’s friends intrust him with any document “in confidence," they will be apt to ask whether bis con fidence is necessarily shared with Theo dore Tilton. * * • * Whatever the result of the investiga tion, these side glances at Plymouth church and tbe inside of its Christian work, and the “ brotherly love ” and “charity" that animate those of its saints that appear in this inquiry, are not wholesome. If Christianity osnnot make a better devel opment of its influence than the Brooklyn harvest, then tbe seed sown in many of onr vineyards is seed sown in vain, “Bustkd.”—The following converse tion is reported to ns as having occurred between two darkeys, who were recently discussing the collapse of the Freedman a Bank: “Basted!” exoleimed an old bewildered darkey, who had placed some shins in the institution, “you don't swan’ tole me dat Freedman’s Bank busted?" “Yes—it’s gone up 1” “Done clear gone ?” “Yes."
