California Is Having a Big Celebration
Today.
San Francisco, Sept. 6.—The semi
centennial celebration of California's
entrance into the Union practically
opened in tkia city today. Although
the scheduled observances will not taka
place until tomorrow, the city is already
in gala attire.
The celebration of the entrance of
the state promises to exceed all expecta
tions. All day today open house is W

quarters of the celebration committee.

training ship Lancastar arrived here
this morning. She will stay at this port
for two weeks. The Lancaster ban jest
finished a cruise in the Baltic, where
Christiana, Copenhagen and Stockholm
were visited. She will sail from here
for Lisbon and Gibraltar.

sand, while others are of the opinion
that it will hardly go over that of 1890,
which was 8,459.
A QUEER CASE.
New York, Bept, 6.—William Park,
the representative in this oity of G.
Foster Clark & Cos., a firm which has
widely advertised all over the country
the “Eiffel Tower Lemonade,’ ap
peared before the court here today on
the obarge of selling goods w itb a mis
leading label. It appears that the
lemonade advertised was analyzed by
the chemists of the Pure Food Depart
ment, and was found to contain a com
pound of tartaric acid, cltrio aoid and
sugar. The case is being watched
closely by the “label" men.

vided for the disinterment of these bod
ies of the southern dead and their re
burial in a special part of the national
cemetery at Arlington, Va. The date
of removal Is sat for October. Holly
wood cemetery in Richmond has been
placed r. - disposal of the association
for the reinterment of the bodice of
all Confederate soldiers which remain
unclaimed.

State Spiritual Association opened its

NEELY EXTRADITION CASE.
Washington, Bept. o.—Henry L. Bur
nett, United States district attorney,
and William A. Henkel, United States
marshal, will appear today before the
United States supreme court In this-wity
to show cause why the final order of
the circuit court In the Neely extradi
tion case should not be corrected and,
speedy justice should not be done. The
decision in question was made by Judge
Wallace, who granted an appeal to the
supreme court in the habeas corpus
proceedings. It was on these grounds
that Judge Lacembs refused to sign a
writ of extradition.

STATE FAIR OPENS.

Bremarhaven, Germany, Sept. 6.
The last shipment of German soldiery
