Portland, Sept. B.—The conquest of
Maine was completed by the republicans
today by monster meetings at as many
as fifteen different cities and towns. Evs
erybody will now rest on laurels, won or
lost, for tue general election takes place
in the state Monday. The republic®*
have waged a hot campaign here. From
August 20 Until now over 700 speeches
en delivered, and ail by men of
national H*"*aUa. The plurality in
the Fine Tree state means soinetniug,
and the G. O. l\s want as large a one as
possible.

Canton, Sept. 8.-The president was

South Bend, Sept. B.—The arrival ot
Gov. Roosevelt in this city this morning
fvwas the occasion of one of the most en
thusiastic scenes ever witnessed in this
state. Companies of cowboys and a
large number of "rough rider" regi
menters greeted him with a reception to
go on the annals. Among the receiving
committee was the full membership of
the famous black regiment of
Elkhart county. Teddy will address a
monster political gathering in this city

Democrats Visit Wisconsin.
Milwaukee, Sept. 8.-Tbe Cook coun-
ty democratic marching clubs arrived in
this city this morning to join in a mon
ster ratification meeting and jubilee
with the democrats of this city. Many
thousands are here,

versary of statehood here today with a

to entertain and house them, The vari
ous headquarters of the reception com
mittee are full to overflowing.
This evening the biggest event of the
celebration will take place. This ia the
naval parade and sham battle, and
will be at once startling and unique.
All the vessels in port and all tbe
larger yachts and sailing craft,as well
as a number of government vessels,
will take part. All the vessels will
be profusely illuminated and the epec
tacular effect will be great. Simul
taneously with the water exhibitions
will be given concerts and fireworks
at various points in the interior of
the oity. Tomorrow there will be
several sacred concerts and a rowing
and sailing regatta

Night Watchman Covers Thieves With
His Pistol and Is Idled.

Alton railroad, was held up by three
masked robbers, While the men were
rifling tbe station money drawer,
night watchman Aulgur appeared,
and pointing bis pistol throogh tbe
partly open door, commanded the men
to surrender. He was immediately
shot in the eye by one of the robbers,
and died soon after. Tbe robbers et

horse show opened this morning. Horses

from a trip to Europe, is managing the
