Former City Treasurer Avows
His Innocence of Misusing
Funds and Strips Him
t . self of Assets.
Xlio tending public is familiar with
various details concerning the apparent
shortage of Mr. H H. Harvey’s ac
counts as city treisarer, as the Times'
Call has from time to time published
developments In the case. Another
turn, was given to the matter yesterday
by an order issued before Judge J. \V.
Benue!, in chambers, by which Mr. Ed
, my Brohston -vas made trustee for Mr.
iJarreyN property. This order was
*%*WSb ! u'a * result of pending litigation
?v irTth to which Mr. Rar-
vey ;-a yoluotanly-lending every aid. In
his papers submitted to the court Mr.
P y, through bis attorney, Judge S.
C. Atkinson, recites the fact that there
exists in his accounts as city treaturer
an apparent shortage of $21,659,37,
This shortage, the petitioner avers,
l was first discovered by City Clerk Jlo
det, who, at the voluntary request of
Mr. Harvey, checked up bis accounts as
treasurer.
The apparent shortage proved a great
surprise to Mr. Harvey, as he states that
at no time and in no manner whatsoever
has he misused or misapplied any funds
belonging to the city. WTiile stating in
detail and in the most explicit terms bis
absolute ignorant:; of how or in what
manner the shortage occurred, and In
like manner affirming his belief that the
apparent shortage is not real, but due
to some error in accounts or records,
| Mr. Harvey ackowledges that in the
Wface of the examination recently made
of his records he is liable to such extent
as the amount named above.
As tho question has been raised as to
whom the city of Brunswick must look
to for a settlement of the amount, am]
said question is in dispute, Mr.
in the absence of definite information,
asks the court to appoint a trustee to as
sume control of hisa-sets until the
questions at issue an be
tied by law. As for Mr. po
sition in the matter the s’afe
that he stan .1 steely in i ! of
desiring to make over to proper tie
all his assets In order that such restitu
tion as they may produce can be ;
to his "redtt against the apparent short
age in his accounts as treasurer.
A schedule of Mr. Harvey's property
follows, and it aggregates in value from
$15,000 to $16,000. In the schedule ap-
pears all Uis worldly possessions, except
wearing apparel and household goods
actually needed for use of his family.
He gives up his piano, horse and buggy
and ail else that Is liable for easy cssh
selling, and thus strips himself and fam
ily of all worldly possessions to restore
money apparently lost through his
hands, but which he avers never became
lost by any knowledge or act of his
own.

TimhsCail for one insertion only.
Mr. Abrams was seen last night by a

“Since placing the ad in the
Times-Cali, on last Tuesday morning,
I have written $22,000 worth or life in
surance, and I freely admit that the
ad was partly the oause of it, and
•then the Phuioix Mutual is known to
be one of the best ndjmost reliable

Amount says that some of those who
haye had their lives insured since that
time, came in voluntarily, seeing his
“ad" in the paper.
