WE DID OUR SHARE.
Eyery Brunswick citizen should feel
proud of the neat sum sent by our peo
ple te the galveston storm sufferers.
The Times-Call has been watching
the donations of other cities and we are
more than pleased in say that no city of
our population has sent more.
Because of our appeal during the yel
low feyer and the prompt response of
Galveston we may have been honor
bound to send a good sum, but whether
we are or not the money has been sent
and a duty is well performed.

KRUDER’S LAST TRjpL
From the Chicago Hecord.
President Kruger’a last trek has pict
uresque and pathetic aspect* *hich will
appeal to the bLtoriao, the painter and
the poet of the future.
According to Lord Huberts the Boer
leader has resigned the presidency of
the Transvaal republic. When last
heard from he was diligently studying
his Bible at Lorenzo Marquez.
Asa boy he trekked with his parents
into Natal to escape the Englishman,
and when tbe Englishman came there
he trekked to a place where be thought
no Englishman would come. The life
he spent there, the work he did and the
nation he founded have come to naught,
ad as be sets on: now on his last trek
even the name of the South African re
public is erased , His nation is appar
ently gone, bis home is gone and he is
as old man, Ualess be still nurses an
obscure hope of awakening interest in
Europe by a personal appeal there i*
nothing left for him but to resign him
self to idleness in some foreign country
and ruminate peacefully upon the part
he baa played in history.
Oom Paul is not handsome and hia
features do cot lend themselves readily
to the ideal iaing alms of the artist. Tne
spreading whisker, the high bat, the
baggy costume of the ex-t>res!fl|Hkfy
roicarcin,-. Nevertheless he
pathetic figure for some painter
right kind of perceptive powers.
PROMPT AND LIBERAL.
One of the maryels of the age is the
quick response to the appeal ,for aid
which came from the devastated gulf
coast of Texas. Before the telegraph
wires had brought the first authentic es
timate of the damage done, contribu
tions for the relief of sufferers were
pouring in. and after a lapse of eight
days it is conservatively estimated that
money and provisions equal in amount
to one-tenth of the total damage, or in
round figures. $9,000,000. haTe been
contributed.
The response to the call on humanity
ha? not been confined-to one section of
cou or oven ho America itself.
London,Liverpool, Manchester, in Eng
land, and Paris, France, have sent thei‘
thousands to feed the hungry and clothe
the naked in the storm-swept district.
People who ten days ago could- net
bare told in what part the world
Galveston lay have read the story of the
disaster with sympathetic horror, and
sent their mite to swell the astounding
total. . u
As days go by and people realize from
graphic description how complete, the
wreck was the volume of contributions
increases. And if it shall be found
that pestilence adds to the sufferings ot
the stricken people, and it Is necossary
to ask for doctors and nurses, the best
aad bravest men and women in AtV ,Hl 9a
will give themselves as es
they have given their money.
When history shall record the story of
Galveston's ruin she will go on to tell
how the world put aside all ordinary
pursuits for a time to feed and clothe
and inspire with new life the stricken
city. And the story will thrill the
hearts of generations yet to come with
generous Impulses.
An eastern paper suggests that Kansas
populists flopping to the republican par

whiskers as a guarantee of good faith.
