THE COAL TRUST.
The owner* and operator* In the an
thracite coal legion* of Pennsylvania,
■Who are held by the great majority of
people responsible for the strike jiut In
augurated, frequently deny that they
constitute a trust.
There are about 200 companies opera
ting sbout 4CO coal mines m Penney).
Tania.
Several great systems of railroad*, in
cluding the Pennsylvania, New Jersey
Central, Lackawana, Reading, Dela
ware and Hudson, Ontario & Western
and Lehigh Valley, own or al
most everyone of-these companies,
lip to several yeare ago these railroads
wre acting, as a rule Independently.
Competition was lively, production was
large, prices were moderate and the con
dition of the employes was such that
complaints were not frequent.
It was about two years ago, on
turn of J. Plerpont Morgan from'Europe
■Where he had consnlted leading finan
ciers of both continents, that the finan
cial world was startle&fey the disclosure
of the authraoite coal combine.
The Morgan and Vanderbilt interests
In ihe great Uafcd "coalers’’ had farmed
©ne great nucleus about which hung all
the varied interests of the anthracite
fields.
They say there 1* no trust.
But ever lnc vbe formation of the
combination “that is not a trusl” the
price and output of anthracite coal In
tbi* country have been fixed by It.
These great railroad* agree among
Ihemselvra upon a tonnage rate for coal.
Naturally they will give tbe coal com
panies they control the best of it. An
independent operator is at their mercy.
So this combination “that is not a
ruat ’ stifles independent enterprise
through juggling with tonnage rates.
This combination "that t* not a trust”
absolutely fixe* the output.
This combination "that is cot a trust”
absolutely fixes tflfe price of its output.
This combination "that is not a trust'
fixes the wages of all the employes.
This combination "that is not a trust"
fixes the policy of all it* conetilneat
companies.
lhis combination “that is not a tru-t”
like a glad Gulliver, turns a deal ear to
the pleas of labor, and smiles derisively
at ihe hope* of 130,000 more people who
o bid p\ li him to his kue cs.
He inters the con'est *S one would a
•port, k’lowiug that to lose will mean to
him only a few suuerfihou* dollars, which
he coaid not lose anyway, while te the
strikers It will mean a continuance in
the bonds that resemble serfdom.
He knows that while victory to him
will mean only added income that he
cannot utilize legitimately, to the min
ers it will mean a longer lease on life
and a comfort or two added to a cheer
less existence. The outcome is a baga
telle to him; it is life and death to the
strikers. Yet -he enters the unequal
contest, confident that power of money
on his part and the confusion of tongues
and the lack of cohesion on the part of
the employee will finally place the
wreath of the viviui Upon uU brow.
And he is careless whether t&e wreath
be drencbe4ta the blood of his victitiii
or not.
PROBABLE CAUSE OF DULL TIMES.
There 1* no disguising the fact that
there is a general business depression
throughout the country, and the chances
lor a revival are anything but bright at
present.
The Chinese trouble may be one cause
of the dull times, but in our judgment
the presidential election will cause a
general stagnation until it is finally set
tled. Bryan supporters say the country
is ruined if McKinley wins, and the re
publican* make the same assertion about
Bryan, and there you are.
• '/ft ' J w' I '*
A business revival always follows these
elections and there is no reason why the
present one should prove an exception to
the rule. Lotus hope that it will not
