THE VERDEBY BHORTA6E:
For some days the Timbs-Call has
heard of the shortage In the accounts of
Mr. M. Verdery, cashier of the Plant
System In this city. ]
We did not grasp this news item like
a miser would a gold coin, but patiently
waited developments. Hr, Verdery has
been at the point of death since the
shortage rumors, and we figured that
our readers could better afford to wait a
few days for the item than have their
newspaper take advantage of an unfor
tunate citizen, Anyway we are not here
.. andeepeclally when
most interested lies with only
a thread bet? -668 Ms maker and hu.
We are not trying lA. offer excuses for
Mr. Verdery, because there are none to
make, but we are telling our subscrib
ers, those who depend upon us for news,
wby the Hem has not been published be
fore.
There are people in Brunswick who
express no regret at a fellow being’s
downfall, but we are glad to say those
kind of people are not conducting the
policy of the Times-Call. If Mr. Vor
dery has misappropriated funds of the
Plant System he will suffer for It; he Is
a man and must face the consequences,
but let him get from beneath the shadow
of death before the scandal mongers and
the demon which is in them reaches the
bedside of the man.
Here is the kind o( an obituary a
Tennessee editor reoently gave a de

been willing from the very gtart of
the trouble to submit every question
involved in the strike to the arbitra

If aver there was a sport that needed
“good oats and careful curry-combing”
In the year of 1901, that sport is base
ball. Many close observes have ex
pressed the opinion that the national
out door game shows indications of be
ing la a decadent stage.
A QUESTION.
The publisher of a newspaper has one
.-thing to rent and one thing to sell.
He has the newspaper to sell and the
- ., r '
space In his columns to rent. Can any
one inform us why he should be ex peel
ed to giue away aitjier the one or the
otner? -
He can It ho chooses, and be does, am
a matter of fact, furnish a great deal
of space rent free, But tit does not
follow that he ought to andO ft so i
V > vest . f
it ought to be recognized as a con
tribution, exactly as would be the giv
ing away of sugar or coffee by a grocer
But, strange to say, It le not looked at
in that light at all, and yet everybody
knows that the existence of a news
paper depends open the rent of Its
space and the sale of the paper, as a
merchant’s success depends on selling
his goods instead of giving them
away.—Copy Hook, %
