“XHE SORROWS OF SATAN.”
Wm. A Brady’s Successful Presenta
tion of this Drama.
To what phase of romantic mysticism
that Weird writer, Marie Corelli, will
next devote her powerful pen it would
be difficult to Imagine, but, whatever
the subject, it is certain to create a sen
sation. She could easily have founded
anew religious cult on the strength of
her “Romance of Two Worlds.’’ By
her ‘'Wormwood” she started half the
curious, wealthy and idle of the Eng
lish speaking race to toying with this
absynthe habit, despite the fact that her
subject had been to depict the horrors
concealed in the opalescent beauty of
the liquor beloved Parisians.
And now, in the “Sorrows of Satan,”
she has completely overturned all for
mer ideas as to the character of the
monarch of hades. It Is not to bo won
dered at that this remarkable book has
been turned to tbeatrioal purposes. Few
of her other novels couid be dramatized.
Like Milton’s “Cornus” and Shaka
speare's “Midsummer Night’s Dream,"
there is in them too much of tho ethe
nal, too much of tho supernatural to
bear the glare of tho, footlights. But
with the devil it is different. He has
been a familiar figure on the stage ever
since the English stage was born, but
never has he appeared under the natural
yet startling circumstances in apßu
Miss Corelli has placed him—a visitor
on earth In modern garb, a god-liko
mortal irresistiblo in his beauty,
strength and genius alike to men and
women.
Wm. A. Brady, after the successful
presentation of this drama at thcShafta
bury theatre, London, was quick to see
the possibilities in it for a tour of this
country, where Miss Corelli enjoys a
greater popularity than any living wo
man wtitcr, and where the sales of her
"Sorrows of Satan" alone have exceed
ed a million copies. Mr. Brady's lavish
ness in the way of elaborate staging,
and his care in the selection of perfect
casts is well known, and the company
which will interpret the play next Mon
day at the Grand will doubtless satisfy
eyen those admirers of Miss Corelli
who appreciate the difficulty of placing
her characters on the stage.
