l • Bruoswck is suffering, as most south
era cities are today, with a vast area of I
uncultivated land in its vicinlt} land i
that could be made to yield great stores
of supplies to suppoit and enrieb our
people.
We understand that Brunswick has au
opportunity to secure a starch and glu
cose factory, to be erected and managed
by men who have records for building
many such factories in the United States
and other countries, every one of which
has been a great success, and togeth e
comprise no inconsiderable part of the
works owned and operated st the pres
enttime by the starch trnst and the g'u
cose trust. If such plant is erected here
by these gentlemen, cassava will be tbe
product they will use in the maeufac
turc of starch and glucose.
Taking it for granted that cassava can
be grown in thisviclniiy as a starch pro
duct at a great profit to the produ ,
and that there ia good money in the
manufacture of starch, glucose, etc.,
fiom castava, our puri oso is to discuss
the tesults 'to be expected from cassava
starch works, as an industrial factor fa
Brunswick and vicinity.
Such a plant as is proposed will consume
the cassava produced on many thousand
aerce, and require the labor of many
per pie to plant, cultivate, harvest and
deliver the crop to the factory. We
will presume that 10,000 acres will be
planted in cassava to supply this factory
The effect of this will be to add at least
i 08 ftt 0009 to our improved
lands, for farmers will grow cassava for
stock food, and a large acreage will be
required for other ordinary crops.
This will he in small farms mostly,
. homes of families, wb oh, including
arvaral hundred factory emploje**,
wilt largely Increase tbe population of
our euuuty and oity. These peotle
wilt bs not only producers, but con
sumers. More, they will open our un
improved lauds, build hotuee, plant or
chards, increase tbe production of all
varieties of farm productr, raise os*-
t!e, hogs, efo , with tbe result that
canning factories, packing homes.
SDd other industr.es, will quickly f 1-

which, we are assured, will be as rep-.

accustomed to building and operating
I large starob mill-, some bnvirg a ca
! pacity of 30,000-bushels of corn per
day.
Let us make more figure*: Three
bushels of cassava equals one of ooro
in starch production. Hence, a factory
grinding 30,000 bushels of corn per
day, would be capable of grf - ding 90,-
000 bushels of cassava; 90,000 bu-bela
of cassava is 2,700 tons. At ten tons
per acre, it would require 270 scree of
osstava to supply such a factory one
day. Reckoning tbe grinding season
on o&esava alone (other products may
be used.) at six months, euob a plant
would consume the oassava grown on
about 60,000 aores of land. This seems
enormous, yet, there are many starob
faotories in tbe North that are grind
ing daily 80,000 busbele of oorn each,
This gives us some idea of the magni
tude of the starch industry, and when
we oonsider that the beat qnality of

produce aa much starch as four acres
of oprn, we get a glimpse of the possi-
bilities cassava baa iff prospect for the
South, and what snob a plant aa Is

Sucb a faciory and tbe cultivation
