AH EIORSiHBNT FOR
“i^TIISSON
I have a large messura of personal
sympathy with the candidacy of one
heroic woman for a responsible public
office in tbe^atate.
I fought the political career of Wil
liam Y. Atkinson as I have never
fought anv man su public life, befoie
or since.
In two fuccessive camp aign E —and in
the fight almost single handed—l op
posed the system of politics by which
he arose, fife, y
I sp read in that storm every etich of
■nuNßrstrie r -•
sail in my equipment. I threw out of
it every ttaitorous fear, and diseardsd
the entire ballast of personal and sel
fish consideration. It was the sternest
and strongest incident of my placid and
unruffled life.
I did not win. Governor Atkinson
sailed serenely—it by a narrow mar
gin—into the haven of success. I was
left adrift for a season upon the high
seas as a derelict.
I have lived to see vindicated and
established every principal of politics
for which I fought and suffered.
He was was great enough to recog
nize the difference between a personal
and a politlbal opposition, and liked
me not tbe less for tbo open battle I
had waged.
He died my frierd, and I remsinefi
hie admirior.
I haye not forgotten the strenuous
and thrilling canvass in which the
woman who bears his name proved her
devoted loyalty, and established he
claim to remarkable ability. It is an
epic iiffßWNrtßTff of woman’s work in
Georgia—and few men have written ft
history in more heroic measure.
Ability can never be a doubtful isiue
4n any claim which this remarkable
woman may prefer. In the high sta
tions that her husband held, she was
everywhere his counsellor, bis help
meet, and his {equal friend. She bore
her part In the white light of station as
Btrongly as the governor carried h:s
owe, and the mistress of the executive
mansion was as famous as Its lord.
Atd when he passed trom strife lo
place, and left her heavy-laden with re
sponsibility—there was never a cry of
weakness from that shadowed home, nor
a single moment of surrender. Sor
vJh laj life-deep in the la art of tho
w'dow, but courage and duly rifted ihe
clouds with purpose, and the womn
in wetds went to work for her own,
dhe woikcd as a woman works, dett
ly and hopefully, bhe worked as u
man works, strongly and fearlessly.
And she has won.
I think tnat the peculiar hero so. of
heratruggle, and the peculiar dfflcul
tics she has met and surmounted, pre
sent in her case, an opportunity by
which a chivalrous sta e can honor, in
her person, the work and the worth o’
woman.
1 think that her proven capacity in
public and pnvase efTairs, justify her
appointment to the place.
And I believe that every political
precedent and every amenity of public
life, and every instinct of courtesy and
chivalry, will incline the present gov
ernor of Georgia to honor and assist tfa”
struggling widow of his distinguished
predecessor in Ihe chair of the state.
It remains to sty that Ido not know
the other candidates— if there be any—
for this responsible tipist. 1 have
heard that my friend Colonel Brown,
the ptesectf aDd able acd popular h-

brarian, does not intend to hold the
position.
8o that I enter, without prejudice,
