Newport, Ky., Nov. 19.—Tbe Ger

morning by order of the comptroller of
tbe c irrene.y. The ealient facts of the
cause of the failure have been known
since Sunday mornitg aud, therefore,
there wera none of the usual s’anes ac
companying a run on a bank by depos
itors.
{ lje xlleg-'d defalcation of A'-istant
Cashier Frank M. Brown to an amount
ofa'bout 3C0,000, was a fact so over
whelming that no depositor was foolish
enough to suppose any good could be
accomplished by a meeting to get hi*
qioney from the bank today. Nationa*
Bank Examiner Tucker, who is in
charge, in an inte: /lew said tho defal
cation was not discovered until 10
o’clock Saturday night, aud that both
be and the bank’s expert wera unable to
find anything wrong until that time,
Ibe discoyeiy was made in a compari
son of Brown’s individual ledger with
tbe cashier's in the daily checking up.
Here it was found that Brown had
been forcing balunces irom day to day
until tbe enormous total of $193,000 had
boon withdrawn from the funds of tbe
bank. Tho only bond which tbe bank
bolds is that of PIUs c. Brown, father
of the assislant cashier, a well known
rher man and president of the Consoli
dat'd Boat Store Company. The bord
is an open one, conditioned to cover
any shortage by the son. it |j said that
though Paris C. Brown voluntarily of
fered his satire property to meet the
ob.lgation. not more than $-20,0' lean
be realized from this source. The bank
was tbe depository of nine building as
sociations and of the adjoining coip jra
tions of Bellevue, Dayton and other
towns, as well as about 1,600 individual
depositors and firms,

Washington, Nov, 19.—Comptroller of

as temporary receiver of the German
National bank of Newport, Ky. The
officials here consider it astonishing
that a defalcation amounl'ng to more
than the roserve of the bank could have
remained undiscovered for any length
of time, but they attempt to offer no ex
