PAGE 18, JULY 14, 2008, THE ISLANDER
<Peto
The house is awfully quiet this
week! I guess it is a good thing since
my beloved Braves are on the West
Coast and that means very late nights
for this faithful fan. I am thankful
for no early morning appointments
so I can sleep in (and my friends say
when do you not sleep in?!) At least
they won the game last night - at 1:15
am! When I stay up and they lose the
game I am not a happy camper.
Seemed like there were a lot more
people at the Pier for the fireworks
this year and all over the Island for
the whole weekend. This Fireworks
Fanatic really enjoyed the show. Looks
like the cost of gas is keeping folks
closer to home which is good for our
local merchants and those of us who
live here all the time can just enjoy
staying home until after Labor Day!

Sterling Elementary
selected as finalist in
national video contest
Sterling Elementary School has
been selected as one of 100 finalists
in a nationwide video contest spon
sored by BigLots. If chosen as a win
ner in the Lots2Give Video Contest,
the school could receive from $2,500
to $10,000 to support two proposed
after-school programs.
Winners will be chosen based on
the number of votes received at www.
lots2give.com. Individuals can vote
up to three times per day through
the July 22 deadline. The site fea
tures the video finalists, which can
be searched by state to narrow the
choices. Sterling Elementary School
is one of six finalists from Georgia.
"Chris Meshanko, our school
counselor, produced the video that
features our students talking about
the after-school programs we would
implement with the funds," said Kelly
Howe, Sterling Elementary School
principal. "With the two programs,
Mustangs in Motion and Action Rule,
we hope to inspire throughout the
school year the kind of enthusiasm
the students display in their video
entry. We are trying to spread the
word so that we can generate as
many votes as possible." □
