THE ISLANDER, JULY 21, 2008, PAGE 7 Election results Continued from Page 1 cratic challenge in the fall. Straw Ballot Among others, the General Prima ry's straw ballot included questions about two rather controversial sub jects - the Glynn County Commis sion's downtown jail and the Casino swimming pool on St. Simons Island. Both Democrats and Republicans wanted the jail moved away from the downtown area. The Democrats voted to move the jail 75% yes to 25% no (2,097 total votes were cast). The Republicans' jail vote was a little less at 70% yes and 30% no (8,712 total votes cast). The swimming pool vote was moot since the county commission demol ished it several weeks ago, but that did not stop local residents from voic ing their displeasure at commission's decision. Democrats voted 81% to 19% in favor of keeping "the continued exis tence of the St. Simons Island public swimming pool at its current loca tion." Republicans voted 60% to 40% in favor of "the continued existence of the Casino pool in the current location, with improvements, even if higher operational costs are needed." Democrats and Republicans dif fered on whether to fund sidewalks on the mainland similar to the ones on St. Simons. Democrats overwhelming approved the sidewalks 88% to 12%. Republicans almost as overwhelm ingly rejected the mainland sidewalks 72% to 28%. On the question of whether to build an extended waterfront walk in Brunswick, again the two parties differed. Democrats voted in favor of the waterfront walk by 86%, while Repub licans rejected it by 69%. The question of whether the coun ty commission should hold two public hearings prior to the county approv ing any capital project exceeding $1 million was approved by the Republi cans by a large 83% vote. Democrats also agreed with the two public hearings by a similar 81% vote. Democrats heavily favored an expanded county recycling program with an 86% vote. On the other hand the Republicans were split near the middle, rejecting a "voluntary recycling program that may include increased fees or taxes to support the expansion" on a 58% no vote. Glynn Republicans also agreed that SPLOST and ESPLOST referen- dums should be held only on General Election dates, not on Special Elec tions, by an 85% vote. The SPLOST, ESPLOST question was not on the Democrats' ballot. Democrats did favor a second causeway from St. Simons to Bruns wick on a 60% yes vote. Democrats also want the county commission to publish an annual Capital Improvements Plan show ing projected funding priorities for county projects proposed for the next five years. They supported this by an 85% vote. Neither of the last two questions on the Democrat's straw poll were on the Republican ballot. □ Living on St. Simons, Ed Kellis has become a neighbor and professional that you can trust.
