Rated R - Drug use
I have always been fascinated by
unexpected consequences.
Take, for example, the traffic circle.
Who would have predicted that this
would impact our movie experience?
Yet it has!
Having observed the action on the
traffic circle, the movie distributor
has sent the racecar movie, Fast and
Furious, to the Island and the new
romantic comedy, Adventureland, to
the Mainland!
This means that the old and young
alike must negotiate the Highway to
Heaven to see this enjoyable new film.
The old will try to stay in the middle
lane... the imaginary lane between the
outside and the inside lanes while try
ing to maintain the minimum speed.
The young, on the other hand, if this
movie is at all accurate, will be drunk,
or smoking pot, or both.
The director of the popular Super -
bad, Greg Mottola, directs this charm
ing, coming-of-age romantic comedy
Adventureland.
This movie will have the greatest
appeal to teenagers under the age of
seventeen, yet it is R-rated, i.e. the
target audience cannot legally see this
movie.
How could this happen?
The movie has some implied sex, a
little profanity and drinking. But, the
kids are smoking pot at every opportu
nity, basically all the time.
Is that Hillary Clinton I see on the
merry-go-round?
The main character is Jimmy Bren
nan (Jesse Eisenberg) and he is the
source of most of the pot.
As a graduation present from his
parents, Jimmy was supposed to be
touring the Old World for the summer
with Iris wealthy pal Eric (Michael
Zegan), instead he has to stay behind
and get a job in Pittsburgh.
As a consolation present, Eric hands
Jimmy a bag of joints as they are say
ing goodbye. They are looking forward
to rooming together when they enter
grad-school at Columbia in the Fall.

THE ISLANDER, APRIL 13, 2009, PAGE 11
Jimmy’s mother (Wendie Malick)
and his Dad (Jack Gilpin) tell him
the bad news that his Dad has been
demoted and that Jimmy will have to
save during the summer if he wants to
go to New York City.
Jimmy is a classics major and has
no job skills. The only place that will
employ him, and rather eagerly, is the
local fairground named, you guessed it,
Adventureland.
They are only open for the summer
season and the owners, Bobby (Bill
Harder), and his wife, Paulette (Kris
ten Wiig), will employ anyone who is
breathing.
So Jimmy ends up working games
with the rest of the dysfunctional los
ers.
Prominent among these is Joel (Mar
tin Starr), a classic nerd with a degree
in Russian literature. Realizing that he
is looking at a career driving a taxicab
or delivering pizza, he bemoans his fate
and is very funny as he walks around
quoting obscure philosophers.
Then there is Em (Emily) played
by Kristen Stewart. She is from a
completely dysfunctional family and is
very vulnerable to the male predator,
the handsome, older maintenance guy
Mike (Ryan Reynolds).
Em and Jimmy are attracted to
each other and the movie is about
their shaky relationship with the many
comic events in the fairground as a
backdrop.
Bill Harder (SAIL, Tropic Thun
der, Pineapple Express), Martin Starr
(.Incredible Hulk, Superbad) and Kris
ten Wiig (SAL, Forgetting Sarah Mar
shall, Semi-Pro) are very funny.

However, the young actors Jesse
Eisenberg (The Hunting Party, The
Squid and the Whale, The Village) and
Kristen Stewart (Into the Wild, Panic
Room) are just great as the young
couple confused by the complexities of
falling in love.
Kristen Stewart gives a multifaceted
performance as she faces disruptions at
home, her domination by Mike and her
affection for Jimmy.
This is a movie for the young at
heart.
