Fort Frederica celebrates National Park Week
Georgia Patriots Day Celebration - April 17-19
Four years ago an Historical
Marker was dedicated at the Fort
Frederica entrance commemorating
The Frederica Naval Action which
occurred on April 19, 1778 — three
years after the “shot heard ‘round
the world” at Lexington, Massachu
setts.
The Fifth Annual observance of
this battle, called Georgia Patriots
Day, will be held Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, April 17, 18 and 19, at
several St. Simons Island locations.
This incredible victory during the
American Revolution by the Geor
gia Navy occurred on the Frederica
River near the ruins of the King’s
Magazine at Fort Frederica. Three
galleys under the command of Conti
nental Army Colonel Samuel Elbert
captured three British Ships without
loss of life for the Patriots!
The Celebration begins on Friday
at 2 p.m. with a presentation by Jack
Ferguson entitled, “Spies and Espi
onage in the Revolutionary War.”
Sponsored by the St. Simons Island
Library, it will be held in Room 108
at the St. Simons Island Casino.
At 10 a.m. Saturday morning, the
Revolutionary War Memorial Cer
emony will be held at the red-brick
St. Simons Casino Courtyard. Units
of the Veterans Council of the Gold
en Isles and Sons of the American
Revolution in Revolutionary War
uniforms with Battle flags will serve
in the Color Guard.
The Glynn Middle School Band
and Chorus will perform and several
organizations will present wreaths
to Revolutionary War Patriots. The
speaker will be David Reuwer, Edi
tor, American Revolution Magazine,
who will describe “South Carolina’s
Role in the American Revolution.”
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Living His
tory activities will feature Colonial
personalities and demonstrations.
Children will be taught Colonial
games and how the Revolutionary
War soldiers drilled with muskets.
On Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 4
p.m., a Revolutionary War Round
table will be held by the American
Revolution Magazine with six speak
ers and audience participation. The
location is in Room 114 at the St.

A special Colonial Worship Ser
vice will be observed on Sunday, at
11 a.m., at the Frederica Baptist
Church, 1700 Frederica Road, St.
Simons Island. The service will fea
ture period music and participants
in Colonial attire.
At 1 p.m. Sunday there will be an
interpretative program at the Fort
Frederica National Monument. At
the Kings Magazine, learn about the
April 19, 1778, actions of the Georgia
Navy Galleys in the battle with Brit
ish ships in the Frederica River.

have significant roles in the Cel
ebration. Support is provided by the
Brunswick-Glynn County Library,
Coastal Georgia Historical Society,
Fort Frederica National Monument,
Veterans Council of the Golden Isles
and the American Revolution Asso
ciation.

SSI Library League
book sale a success
Book lovers don’t mind a little
rain and they proved it by giving the
St. Simons Library League another
record-breaking spring book sale.
Bruce Rumage reported receipts
of $11,400 after expenses. “We had
some exceptional books and we are
grateful for the support of the com
munity," he said.
Proceeds from the book sale will
be used to fund special events, the
Children’s Summer Reading Pro
gram, Lunch with the Author and
Movie Night at the Casino, which has
recently added matinee showings to
its film program. □
National Park Week, April 18
through April 26, is an annual week
proclaimed by the President of the
United States for celebration and rec
ognition of America’s National Parks.
Fort Frederica National Monument is
offering some special programs to high
light the park’s history.
On Saturday, April 19, 7 p.m. vis
itors are invited to join Frederica’s
18th-century residents at the site of
the Bennett Tavern. Taverns were an
important focal point of colonial towns
like Frederica. Visitors will enjoy an
evening in the tavern and learn about
Frederica’s past, participate in colonial
tavern games and sing period tav
ern songs. Non-alcoholic refreshments
will be served. Admission fees will be
charged.

Roberta Bom Scholarship
applications available
Golden Isles Arts and Humanities
Association (GIAHA) is offering the
annual Roberta M. Born Scholarship
in the arts and humanities to a ris
ing senior, a 2009 high school gradu
ate, or college student from Glynn
County.
The scholarship is named in honor
of Roberta Born, a former GIAHA
board member and educator who
had a strong understanding of the
importance of the arts and the arts
in education, and is supported by
the Eugenia Price/Joyce Blackburn
Foundation. This year’s scholarship
is $1000.
The postmark deadline to apply
is Friday, May 8, 2009. Application

SAR will commemorate Patriot’s Day
with a special program commemo
rating the Revolutionary War battle
which occurred in the Frederica River
in 1777.
On Junior Ranger Day, Saturday,
April 25 Junior Ranger’s will be able
to participate in two Junior Ranger
programs — Fort Frederica’s and the
Cultures of the Coast. Children who
complete the activities are awarded a
Junior Ranger badge, certificate and
patch.
Admission Fees: Adults (age 16+)
are $3.00 per person. Children under
age 16 are free. Fort Frederica, Nation
al Parks, Golden passes are valid for
admission to the park and its events.

speak at Library
Learn more about the history of
coastal Georgia when Michele Nicole
Johnson discusses her book, Sapelo
Island’s Hog Hammock on Thursday,
April 16, 7 p.m. at the Brunswick
Library. A resident of Sapelo, Michele
will discuss the Gullah-Geechee com
munity, one of the last of its kind, and
the entrepreneurs, craftsmen, and com
munity leaders that live their. Program

Club to meet
St. Simons Chess Club will meet
