City working on tree ordinance
• Tree City USA status regained
By Matthew J. Permar
Just as Glynn Comity has been
working on a tree protection ordinance
for several years, the City of Bruns
wick’s Park and Tree Board (P&TB)
has been developing their version of a
tree ordinance for over a year as well.
“We’ve been working on our ordi
nance in some form or another for over
nances for different areas.”
“We know there are a lot of issues
that will have to be decided,” explained
Chilton, “and we still have not decided
on whether to make this an ordinance
for trees on public property only or if
we should recommend that the city
commission have it apply to trees on

status from the Arbor Day Foundation last week were: Rusi Patel, Assistant
City Attorney; Park and Tree Board (P&TB) member Michael lacomini; P&TB
chairman Nick Chilton; P&TB member Sandy Turbidy and Brunswick Mayor
Brian Thompson. The group is standing in front of the large live oak tree,
believed to be more than 100 years old on the corner of Gloucester and
Union Streets in front of the Customs House City Hall. Thompson has a post

a year,” P&TB chairman Nick Chilton
told The Islander during last week’s
board meeting, “Assistant city attor
ney Rusi Patel has gathered up tree
ordinances from Augusta, Savannah,
Valdosta and other municipalities and
counties, including St. Simons, and
we’ve been reviewing those.”
“In addition to gathering informa
tion on existing tree ordinances,” Chil
ton continued, “the Georgia Forestry
Commission has a guide book, that
we’ve been using, on how to tailor ordi-
private property too.”
“The park and tree board has been
in existence for a while” said Chilton,
‘We are here to promote the asset of
our urban forest and its environment.
It is an important asset to protect, this
kind of tree cover. Very few cities have
it. We want development to continue to
occur in the city, but we want to protect
the tree cover too.”
