Seems like not a week goes by
that my life isn't touched by the news
of another friend or family member
whose life has been touched by cancer.
This month there are many opportu
nities to participate in and support
research to find a cure for this dreadful
disease. There seems to be something
for everyone so do more than just open
your wallet - get involved! Support our
community by volunteering and par
ticipating.

JI Arts opens new exhibit
George Netherton, painter, and
metal sculptor Tyler Dominey will
showcase their works in an upcom
ing exhibit sponsored by the Jekyll
Island Arts Association in the Gallery
of Goodyear Cottage in Jekyll Island’s
Historic District. The exhibit opens
Friday, May 1 and an artists' reception
will be held Sunday, May 3 p.m. to 3
p.m.
Bom in Brunswick Dominey became
a propeller blacksmith at his family’s
marine machinery business. Growing
up on the coast he always had a pas
sion for sea life and his regular visits
to Disney World expanded his creative
perception of what was possible. Tyler
is a strong believer in imagination and
feels there are no limits when it comes
to his metal sculptures.
Gradually working up from single
sheet sculptures to full-dimensional,
layered work, Tyler challenges himself
to form even more unique sculptures
showing greater creativity and grace
fulness with each design. Tyler’s work
is on exhibit in many galleries and
private collections in Florida, Georgia,
South Carolina and Virginia.
Forms, colors and light discovered
and found in nature are most intrigu
ing according to Netherton and he
believes it is the context of nature that
gives these elements life as well as
making them challenging and elusive.
Growing up in New York, where he
visited museums and galleries, George
was fascinated by design and form. His
greatest influences are from many of
the American Masters and the Califor
nia Impressionists. While traveling on
business George sought out galleries,
exhibits and museums to enjoy their
work. Nine years ago, he sought out his
own instructor to take weekly lessons
in the art form he loves. George is the
Past President of the Georgia Coastal
Artists Guild and specializes in land
scape and architectural paintings.
The exhibit will continue through
May 31. Admission to Goodyear Gal
lery and shop is free. Horn’s are Mon
day through Friday, noon until 4 p.m.
and weekends 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For
information call 635-3092. □
