mous board vote and on the recom
mendation of Acting Superintendent
Howard Mann.
On Thursday, April 23, Gornto
and the Golden Isles Career Academy
moved into their new office at the
Academy building.
The career academy is still undergo
ing some cosmetic changes including
landscaping and the installation of a
Perry Elementary School building so
the transportation staff could move
in.
During a bus drivers' meeting on
Wednesday, the floor in the office
cracked and, in places, dropped about
four to six inches.
Mann told The Islander, "A por
tion of the building was built over
a city storm water drain that leads
from the Academy Creek Treatment
Plant through Hercules to the Back

greenhouse, according to Dr. Gornto.
Gornto's move was quickened due
to structural problems with the foun
dation in the school system's Trans
portation Department office at the
intersection of O St. and MLK, Jr.
Blvd, according to Mann.
When the Transportation office suf
fered structural damage last Wednes
day, April 22, Gornto and his staff
moved out of their offices in the former
River. The city's N St. drainage project
diverted the pipe around the transpor
tation building, but left the old piece
in place under the building."
"The building has been settling and
sagging for at least 22 years that I'm
aware of," said Mann, "and with all
the rain we've had, water must have
leaked into the pipe and caused the
floor to collapse. There is an eight inch
drop from one side to the other."

YOUR SELLER CHECK LIST
Last week, we began our discussion about how sellers should work
from a check list of the improved features that could make a difference
when selling. We’ll continue that list this week.
Freshen up your closets with closet organizers to maximize storage
space and paint them a neutral, washable color. Remember, lighting is an
often overlooked feature in closets.
Take a good look from the street in front of your home. Look for shrubs
that are overgrown or dead; remove them and replace with shrubs or
plants that are scaled to your home. Limit any yard ornaments to a
favored few.
Make sure there is balanced lighting in every room for dusk or evening
showings. Dimmers help set the tone. Polish and wax hardwood floors
to brighten and blend an old finish. Clean every surface until it shines.
Clean can seal a deal. Don’t forget windows.

"The building is secure, but we
decided to move everyone out for safe
ty reasons," explained Mann, "We cer
tainly don't want anyone breathing
any of the fumes."
When the floor cracked last week,
transportation employees could smell
fumes from the pipe.
The GICA staff moved to give the
Transportation staff their former
office space.
Half of transportation is now housed
in Gornto's old offices and half is in the
bus drivers' lounge.
Mann said, "The current plan is to
demolish the transportation building
and use portable buildings on a tem
porary basis. Then when the college
(College of Coastal Georgia) moves out
of the Adult Education building this
August, we will house transportation
in those offices."
Staff from Altamaha Technical
College will begin moving into their
offices at the GICA soon, according to
Gornto. □
Back Talk

wall and then to the floor.
During the fall, Konie's face hit a
cabinet knob knocking out her front
teeth and blackening her left eye.
As he tackled her, the officer had
her left arm and his weight came
down on her shoulder.
Konie would later learn he broke
her shoulder in three places.
When the officer finally got off, he
yanked her up, pulling her back as if
she was a criminal.
Nine months later her arm and
shoulder still gave her problems.
This is a woman whose only crime,
or non-crime, was to disregard a man
datory evacuation order to leave the
city, choosing to stay in her own house
instead.
This is just one of numerous stories
in a book that would keep Steven King
up at night.
The ease with which the rights
of law abiding citizens were abused,
denied and trampled on is alarming.
For those who believe in their Con
stitutional right to bear arms, this
book will stand as a testament your
belief.
Those who believe the right to bear
arms in order to defend yourself, your
family and your property is silly and
unnecessary absolutely need to read
this book to learn exactly how a gov
ernment out of control can leave you
defenseless.
The scaiest part of this book is the
end in which they authors describe
how laws were enacted by both the
Louisiana state government and the
federal government to ensure that
these types of abuses do not occur
again during an emergency situation.
The scary part was New Orleans
Police Superintendent Warren Riley's
opinion of the new law.
Riley is quoted in a radio inter
view saying, "During circumstances
like that, we cannot allow people to
walk the streets carrying guns. As law
enforcement officers, we will confis
cate the weapon if the person is walk
ing down the street, and they may be
arrested."
Here's the rub... When asked if
they are carrying a gun, law abiding
citizens will say 'Yes.' Criminals will
say, 'No.' □
