PAGE 2, MAY 4, 2009, THE ISLANDER Page 2 Two Golden Isles Elementary School (GIES) students recently had their art work displayed in Atlanta as part of the Georgia Art Education Association's Capitol Art Exhibit. GIES art teacher Jamie Scott selected artwork by third-grader Laura Carter and fifth-grader Brandon Wright for display at the show. Laura (pictured at the exhibit), traveled with her family to Atlanta for the exhibit opening, where she met local congress men Senator Jeff Chapman and Representative Jerry Keen, and State Zaner-Bloser Names Georgia State Champions in National Handwriting Competition Ten students from Georgia are part of an elite group of elementary and mid dle school students across the country who have made a name for themselves as some of the best handwriters in America. These students are the 2009 state winners of the 18th annual Zaner- Bloser National Handwriting Contest. The students emerged as superior from about 200,000 entries represent ing grades 1-8 across the country. Their entries were judged on the printing skills of first and second graders, and the cursive abilities of students in grades 2 through 8. Local winners include: Dhaval Modi, 1st grader; Nicholas Bulatao, 3rd grad er; and Enya Spicer 7th grader from St. Francis Xavier Catholic School State winners were selected by a panel of professional handwriting experts. All statewide winners will next pit their entries against each other in their respective grade level to compete for national honors. Ultimately, one of the national grade-level winners will be named as the Grand National Cham pion. The teacher of the Grand National Champion also gets rewarded with a trip for two to Washington, DC. For more information about ZB, visit www.zaner-bloser.com. □ Library program Dr. Pearl McHaney will discuss "Eudora Welty’s Cosmos: Memoir, Photographs, Stories and The Opti mist’s Daughter," as part of the Eudora Welty Centennial Lecture Series at the Brunswick Library Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. This free public program is sponsored by the Georgia Center for the Book and the Georgia Humanities Council. Dr. McHaney, an Associate Professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, teaches twentieth-century American prose and poetry. Eudora Welty is the primary focus of her research and pub lications and she has given invited lec tures on Welty around the world. Swine Flu/HINl Flu update There is an ongoing outbreak of H1N1 Flu or Swine Flu throughout the United States. One death related to this situation has been reported in Texas at this time. One confirmed case has been reported in LaGrange Georgia. There have been no reported cases in Southeast Georgia or Glynn County at this time. There has been no change to the (OPCON) or operat ing conditions and we remain at level 5, normal day to day operations. Emergency Management is moni toring this situation and remaining in contact with Public Safety Agen cies, as well as the Coastal Health District, and the local hospital sys tem. We do encourage education and preventative measures at this time for employees and the public. Official guidance can be located at www.cdc.gov/swineflu which is the Center for Disease Control website. Current primary recommenda tions are, frequent hand washing using soap, warm water, and scrub bing of hands up to the wrist for at least twenty seconds. Alcohol based hand sanitizer products are help ful but not a replacement for hand washing. Cover your mouth or nose when sneezing or coughing, preferably with a tissue that you can dispose of. If you experience flu like symptoms, such as fever, sore throat, cough, etc., do not go to work, school or other public gatherings, and contact your health care professional. The Brunswick/Glynn County Emergency Management Agency will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as they become available or as needed. □ Life is hectic...
