4-H Advisory Council awards scholarship
Carrie Ma (left) accepted the Glynn County 4-H Advisory Council's
Rudolph Beggs Memorial Scholarship last week from Council member
Ginger Wallen, who is the daughter of former Glynn County UGA Exten
sion Agent Rudolph Beggs.
Last week, during Glynn Acade
my's Honors Night program, Glynn
County Senior 4-H'er Carrie Ma was
awarded the Glynn Comity 4-H Advi
sory Council's, Rudolph Beggs Memo
rial Scholarship of $2000.
"Over the last three years Carrie
has rarely missed an opportunity to
give back to her community," said cur
rent Glynn Comity UGA Extension
and 4-H Agent Robi Gray.
"She has invested hundreds of
horn’s in service works such as picking
up trash along the beach, bagging oys
ter shells, volunteering at the DNR's
CoastFest and the Exchange Club
Fair, painting faces at school festivals,
working at a local mission, and assist
ing with many Keep Brunswick and
the Golden Isles Beautiful events,"
Gray continued.
Carrie has played the cello for 6
years and in July 2008, she won the
opportunity to represent Glynn Coun
ty at the Georgia 4-H State Congress.
In addition, Carrie has been a lead
instructor of the National Geographic
Society sponsored, “4-H Evacuation
Mapping” project using Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) and has
taught GIS to youth and adults from
coastal Delaware to Texas. Last
August, Carrie and her fellow 4-H’ers
were honored in San Diego with the
Special Achievement in GIS Award.
Amazingly, these Glynn 4-H’ers were
the only youth - out of 100,000 GIS
users in the world - to receive this
honor.
"Undoubtedly, Carrie is one of the
finest examples of how 4-H cultivates
tomorrow’s leaders," said Gray.
Rudolph Beggs was a Glynn Comity,
UGA Cooperative Extension Agent for
33 years and is remembered by many
for his award winning programs and
his unwavering dedication to serving
the people of Glynn County.
Beggs invested ‘his best” in the youth
of our community with the knowledge
that they will be its future.
Beggs also challenged young and
old alike to spend more time in the
beautiful outdoors of the Golden Isles
and developed a very successful com
munity garden on St. Simons Island.
Much like the man for which this
scholarship is named, Carrie Ma is
dedicated “to making the best better”
in Glynn Comity. □

Middle.
During the negotiations the city
said they did not want the Greer
building demolished, so the $400,000
was never spent. It will now be used
to purchase the four acres on the
south side of the new middle school on
Lanier Blvd.
The BOE has no current plans for
the additional four acres. It will be
held for future growth or other future
needs.
The BOE was required to obtain a
waiver from the state Dept, of Educa
tion in order to build the middle school
on the original 15 acre tract. □
