Finance committee
defers Altamaha
Park lease
Eagle at 13
What do you do when you achieve an organization's highest rank in two years? Go to
Disney World®? That's the question facing McClain Culver, a soon to be Eagle Scout
in St. Simons United Methodist Church's Boy Scout Troop 248. After earning the requi
site 21 merit badges, Culver completed his Eagle Scout project, a requirement for the
award, working in conjunction with the City of Brunswick and the Signature Squares
organization. Islander Staff Photo

Tony Thaw, Chairman of
the Glynn County Finance
committee pulled an item to
discuss revisions to the lease
agreement between Glynn
County and Altamaha Park
of Glynn County, Inc from the
committee's agenda on Tues
day, June 9.
Thaw said the County Attor
ney had not finished reviewing
the agreement.
However, later in the week a
draft revision, Second Amend
ment to Leasehold Agreement,
of Paragraph 15 Special Stipu
lations of the lease agreement
was available and included the
following changes:
• no camp site lot shall be
used as a permanent resi
dence.
• leasing of camp site lots
shall not abridge County's

Mann named
finalist for
Superintendent
The Glynn County Board of
Education voted 6-1 at its June
9 meeting to name Howard S.
Mann as the finalist for the
vacant superintendent posi
tion with the Glynn County
Glynn School Superintendent
finalist Howard Mann
School System.
Mann, who had served as
assistant superintendent for
operations, was appointed
interim superintendent in Feb
ruary 2009.
Coming back into open ses
sion, after a closed ses
sion, the board directed
its legal counsel, Andrew
H. Lakin, to begin con
tractual negotiations
with Mann.
Georgia law stipu
lates that the names of
finalists for a superin
tendent position must
be made public for two
weeks. After the two-
week period, the Glynn
County Board of Educa
tion will meet to take a
formal vote on appoint
ing Mann as superinten
dent of schools in Glynn
County.

McClain Culver of Boy Scout
Troop 248 recently finished his
Eagle Scout project by helping
beautify Brunswick.
McClain, the son of Pete
Culver and Dr. Suzanne Bish
op, both of St. Simons Island,
installed twenty-four signs in
fourteen city squares across
both downtown and the his
toric district.
This project was completed
in conjunction with Signature
Squares, a non-profit organi
zation dedicated to renovating
Brunswick's public parks and
squares.
McClain assembled, paint
ed, and installed the signs over
a period of approximately three
weeks this spring.
Impressively, McClain is a
rising freshman at Frederica
Academy and he completed
Friedman
this project at the age of 13.
Consequently, the precocious
scout is now the youngest Eagle
Scout in the St. Simons United
Methodist Church's Troop 248
and is one of the youngest
Eagles in the Okefenokee Area
Council's jurisdiction.
According to Coastal District
Scout Executive Don Lajoie,
earning an Eagle Scout badge
by age 13 is very unusual, con
sidering 11 is age for joining
Boy Scouts.
"Most scouts who make
Eagle normally do it between
ages 15 and 18," said Lajoie,
"McClain has obviously worked
hard for this."
Julie Hunter, director of
Signature Squares, said that
this project has been a great
benefit to Brunswick and has

plan reviewed this
week by IPC
By Matthew J. Permar
During their May meeting,
Glynn County's Island Plan
ning Commission (IPC) was
presented with a proposed
revision to the Pier Village
Preservation ordinance that
were somewhat confusing to
island residents who attended
the meeting.
At the time the IPC deferred
any action on the revisions to
Section 709 of the County Zon
ing Ordinance and scheduled a
work session.
Four of the seven IPC
members, Desiree Watson,
Paul Sanders, John Dow and
Patricia Laurens, attended the
work session on Tuesday, June
9 to review and discuss the
changes.
Basically, the changes
include a revision of the Pier
