Bachelor parties can get a little
crazy especially if they are held in
Las Vegas because, “Some guys can’t
handle Vegas.”
In Peter Berg’s movie, Very Bad
Things (Jon Favreau, Jeremy Pivens
and Christian Slater), the party fun
leads to murder and cover-up, and a
comedy that quickly turns grim.
On the other hand, The Hangover,
is fun from beginning to end and,
fortunately for the audience, the anec
dote “What happens in Vegas, stays in
Vegas” does not apply.
Doug (Justin Bartha) is getting mar
ried to the beautiful, Katherine Zeta-
Jones look-alike, wealthy Tracy (Sasha
Barrese) in a couple of days in L.A.
and with Tracy’s tacit consent and
her Dad’s (Jeffrey Tambor) encourage
ment (he supplies the classic Mercedes
convertible for the trip), Doug goes off
for his bachelor party to Las Vegas
with his longtime buddies Phil (Brad
ley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms).
Now Phil and Stu are not your wild
and crazy types.
Phil is a high school teacher and is
happily married with a little boy.
Stu is a doctor, actually not a real
doctor, as he is a dentist, and is domi
nated by his controlling, live-in girl
friend Melissa (Rachael Harris).
Not much is revealed about Doug
but he is the type that drives down the
center lane of the interstate doing 60.
How can these guys possibly get into
trouble?
The wild card is Tracy’s brother,
Alan (Zach Galifianakis) who joins
them for the bachelor party. Now Man
is not playing with a full deck and
the disastrous events that follow lead
directly through him.
The Hangover opens with a phone
call from Phil to Tracy from somewhere
in the desert.
Phil: Tracy, its Phil.
Tracy: Phil, where the hell are you?
Phil: We lost Doug!
Tracy: What? We’re getting married
in five hours.
Phil: Yeah... that’s not going to hap
pen.
The rest of the movie takes us from
their departure to this point.
The scene is set by the playing of
Glenn Danzig’s song, "Thirteen", as
they drive into Las Vegas.

back,
I was born to bring trouble wherever

"Pollock." USA, 2000, directed by
Ed Harris. The troubled life of influential
American abstract expressionist painter
Jackson Pollock (Ed Harris) and his marriage
to fellow artist Lee Krasner (Marcia Gay
Harden) make for absorbing drama in the
actor's first stint behind the camera. 122
minutes; Rated R.

Maybe a little too pessimistic.
Next we see them on the roof of the
hotel toasting Doug with shots of Jae-
germeister and then the camera pans
through their hotel suite sometime the
next morning.
The place looks like it has been
hit by a bomb; there is a tiger in
the bathroom, a baby in the closet, a
rooster strutting around, Stu is miss
ing a front tooth and Doug is nowhere
to be found.
They have absolutely no memory of
anything that happened after the toasts
on the roof... a serious hangover.
They retrace their footsteps using
receipts in their pockets and we meet
Jade the prostitute (Heather Graham),
Mike Tyson the boxer (himself), fun
loving cops (Rob Riggle and Cleo King),
Dr. Valsh (Matt Walsh) the doctor at
the hospital, Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong)
the gay gangster and minister Palermo
(Bryan Callen) at his Little Wedding
Chapel.
It is raunchy, laugh-out-loud humor
the whole way.
Bradley Cooper (Nip/Tuck, Mias,
Failure to Launch), Ed Helms (The
Office, Semi-Pro, Walk Hard, The
Daily Show) and Zach Galifianakis
(What Happens in Vegas, Into the Wild)
are great but Galifianakis carries the
movie with his dumb humor and his
impersonation of Dustin Hoffman’s
Rainman.
As an aside, this is Bradley Coo
per and Justin Bartha’s third movie
together, the others being New York, I
Love You and Failure to Launch.
The writing team of Jon Lucas and
Scott Moore has improved immensely
from their last outing in The Ghosts

of Girlfriends Past which was pretty
funny.
The director, Todd Phillips (School
for Scoundrels, Starsky and Hutch)
captures many great images especially
the trashed hotel suite and handles the
very large cast with apparent ease.
And did I mention that the
soundtrack is great from Danzig’s
"Thirteen" to Dan Finnerty’s sugges
tive version of "The Candy Shop" at the
end. Best not to hire this guy for your
daughter’s wedding!
I laughed my head off at this one.
