Southeastern Bank celebrates 120 Years
Business Upda
This year Southeastern Bank cel
ebrates a milestone of serving custom
ers in southeast Georgia and northeast
Florida. One hundred and twenty years
ago, an institution was born that has
continued to grow and become an inte
gral part of local communities through
out southeast Georgia and northeast
Florida. Known today as “Southeast
ern Bank,” it’s roots trace back to 1889
when “The Darien Bank” first opened
its doors for business in Darien.
At the time of the bank’s beginning,
many of the current communities and
counties were not yet established or
in existence. Dining its 120 years,
Southeastern Bank has been witness
to an ever-changing local and nation
al landscape. From a booming and
then flattening timber business in the
early 1900’s, through World War II and
through fluctuating economic times,
Southeastern Bank has been a stable
presence in local communities. Genera
tions have walked through the bank’s
doors and experienced Southeastern’s
solid financial service offerings.
Southeastern Bank is committed to
community service. Its team members
in the bank’s 17 branches regularly
participate and support over 45 char
itable organizations and community
endeavors. Providing man-power, sup
plies, volunteer hours and financial
support, bank staff are involved in
helping make local communities the
best they can be.
“Southeastern Bank is proud of our
long history of excellence in banking,”
said Cornelius P. Holland, Southeast
ern Bank President and CEO. ‘We are
grateful to our customers and local com
munities for supporting us throughout
the last 120 years and we look forward
to another 120 years of doing business
in southeast Georgia and northeast
Florida.”
In celebration of this 120th anniver
sary, Southeastern Bank invites cus
tomers to visit its branches each Friday

assets to both company and clients.
“Coming back to the Golden Isles
is coming home for me, since I gradu
ated from Glynn Academy in 1971,”
Podlin states. “In fact, it was in 1970
when, fresh from my summer at the
Governor’s Honor’s acting program, I
first met the Hodnett family.” Ann
Hodnett was producing The Lion in
Winter at the Island Players, and the
young aspiring actor landed a part in
the play.
When Podlin is not brokering real
estate, he travels. His most recent
trips have carried him to Tokyo, Rome,
and Egypt, and he plans to take his
son, Hunter, to Egypt and Greece this
summer.
Mark will be in the Mainland Office,
adjacent to the Glynn Place Mall at 11
Trade Street in Brunswick. □

The Georgia Department of Labor
(GDOL) has reported that the state’s
seasonally adjusted unemployment
rate was 9.3% in April, up slightly from
a revised 9.2% in March and February.
May unemployment figures are not yet
available.
However the GDOL has announced
that 75,436 laid-off workers filed first

insurance benefits in May, an increase
of 68.7% from May of 2008.
The metropolitan areas with the
highest percentage of increase in claims

year,” said State Labor Commissioner
Michael Thurmond. “Initial claims were
also down from April to May in 11 of our
state’s 14 metro areas. I remain hopeful
that Georgia’s job losses will continue to
decline in the coming months.”
Most of the state initial claims were
filed by laid-off workers in manufactur

insurance benefits rose 110% over the
