said, "I am happy with the amend

The Amendment was modeled after
the seven points previously presented

"I realize it's going to take a long
time to accomplish what I want to
accomplish in Altamaha Park but this
(the lease amendment) is a start,"
Comm. Callaway said.
What Callaway said she would like
to see happen in the future at the Park
is no automatic lease renewals and no
sale of personal property.
"When there is someone on the
waiting list, I would like to make that
renewal available to them," she said.

GREAT HOME CHECKLIST
Now that we are facing the long, hot summer here in Brunswick and
the Golden Isles, it might be a good idea to prepare your home for a
hassle-free summer. These small items can easily be checked off each
week.
Clean all showerheads and faucet aerators. Clean and seal tile grout.
Most important, clean the exhaust duct and space under the dryer. This
prevents lint from accumulating and reduces the risk of fire.
Inspect washing machine hoses; replace those showing signs of wear
or leakage. Inspect your deck or patio for any deterioration and safety
hazards. Repair loose boards, protruding nails or other safety issues.
Be sure to keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher handy. Wash the
home’s exterior; caulk exterior joints around all windows and doors. Be
sure to change air conditioner filters. Inspect and clean your chimney.

ert Ussery.
Charles Stewart, County Admin
istrator, made the recommendation
based on Robert Ussery's long involve
ment with the project. "Also," Stewart
said, "bids would likely be higher (than
the $45,000)."
In a June 3, 2009 letter to Stewart,
Ussery outlined his firm's proposed ser
vices which include preliminary plans
and budget, design review, design
development, construction documents,
bidding and negotiation and contract
administration. Additional services
would be provided at an hourly rate.
Total cost for Phase II is budgeted
at $1.1 million and includes paving
and new sidewalks, plaza area at the
end of the pier, site lighting, landscape
and irrigation, rework roof design on
pier, playground, benches and park
furnishings, Georgia Power relocate
overhead wiring, landscape and archi
tectural design, and signage.
Funding for Phase II is included in
SPLOST V. According to Stewart Uss
ery's fee will be paid from the County's
general fund balance and reimbur sed
with SPLOST V funds with interest
when funds become available.

“really helped raise awareness” of the
city's unique and lovely design.
According to Ms. Hunter, the
squares date back to the 18th cen
tury when Georgia was still a British
colony. Brunswick was planned in
a similar manner to Savannah and
followed a grid pattern. The checker
board blue print allowed designers to
place squares throughout the city that
would allow nature to flourish and
provide recreation for the citizens.
Brunswick has been in a unique
situation because it preserved the
squares after the American Revo
lution, while many municipalities
Americanized what was formerly
British.
Instead of Americanizing, Bruns
wick kept all of the original squares'
names. The nomenclature is largely
divided between local islands, such
as Blythe and Jekyll Squares, and
important British political figures.
Over the years many of the squares
in Brunswick had deteriorated and
had come to resemble vacant lots
instead of emerald islands in a sea of
brick and mortar.
The Signature Squares project
was founded in December of 2004 in
order to ultimately reinvigorate the
squares.
Eventually the signage project came
to fruition for two reasons.
A grant was delivered by The
Friends of Coastal Georgia History in
order to pay for the signs and young
McClain Culver contacted Julie Hunt
er while he was researching his Eagle
Scout project. Thanks to a few people's
donations and one scout's generous
application of elbow grease the Bruns
wick Squares have been enlivened and
returned to glory.
Troop 248 will hold an Eagle cer
emony for Culver in about two or
three weeks.
Squares included in Culver's Eagle
Scout project along Norwich Street,
north to south were: Hillary, Blythe,
Hillsborough (near Glynn Academy),
Wright (near Glynn Middle School),
Halifax, Satilla and Frederica.
Squares along Newcastle Street,
north to south included: Machen,
Jekyll, Queen, Hanover, King, Crisp-
en and St. Simons. □
