Norwich clean-up
Continued from Page 1
owner of Duckworth Tire on Norwich
St. "If the abandoned houses could
be cleaned up or removed, the Street
would look much better," he said.
"I have noticed the increased police
patrols and a drop in the numbers of
prostitutes on the street," Duckworth
said.
Revitalization of Norwich Street is
part of the City's Comprehensive Plan
which is updated annually and also
part of the Blueprint Brunswick Plan
which has been incorporated into the
Comprehensive Plan.
According to Mathew Hill, Execu
tive Director of the DDA, the plans for
Norwich are mixed use including resi
dential and business.
The Norwich Street business group
meets monthly with the City Commis
sion to update the Commission.
Recommendations from the group at
the June 17 Brunswick City Commis
sion Work Session included:
Dilapidated/Abandoned
structures & property
• Tear down all the abandoned hous
es and get business to haul off all the
old cars in front of the business
• Cleanup or demolish dilapidated/
un-kempt properties and lien the prop
erty for expense
• Enforce property upkeep (demoli
tion by neglect) sections of city code
Lighting/Safety
• Better lighting on the street.
• The lack of security at night and on
weekends
• Add more street lights. Ask busi
ness owners to add lights to the front
and sides of their businesses. If a busi
ness has a vacant lot next door, start a
once-a-month community cleaning and
mowing of these lots
• Support the Police Dept, and the
management of the police force by the
Police Chief
Economic Development/Design
• City should work to make it attrac
tive for new businesses to develop
• The entrance to Norwich from
Gloucester currently is two empty park
ing lots. Something is needed to attract
tourists and locals into tinning on to
the street.
• Develop/transform the old build
ings between Central Hardware and
Auto Zone into a small Mexican Village
with imports from Mexico and Mexican
music and food, much like the river
walk in San Antonio, Texas. Move the
flea market down to the village with
vegetable and fruit stands. Sell ice cold
beer and sodas (like Keller’s Flea Mar
ket in Savannah). Put parking behind
the shops so visitors can walk freely
between the streets from one side of the
road to the other. Cross-walks.
Prostitution
• Investigate how other communities
have effectively dealt with prostitu
tion.
• Eliminate the prostitutes and drug
dealers. □
