The 2009 Church Open in full swing August 8
By Sarah Banks Long
Sullivan to discuss Spanish influence
on the Georgia Coast
Kenneth Adkins Ministries Inc. will
hold "The 2009 Church Open" Satur
day, August 8 on Jekyll Island.
The golf tournament starts at 8 a.m.
and costs $100 per player ($400 per
team) and includes lunch and a tee
shirt.
The proceeds from the tournament
will help send local inner city youth on
mission trips around the world.
Before Kenneth Adkins, pastor of
The First Jordan Grove Missionary
Baptist Church, moved to the Bruns
wick area, he had the opportunity to
go on a three week missionary trip
to China. During this trip, he helped
build a church and worked with the
Chinese on farming techniques.
"There were two things the people
had never seen: a black man and a
toothbrush," said Adkins. "The area
was extremely poor, but the people
were happy to have our help. The expe
rience changed my life."
Adkins wants to give this experience
to other youth in the area. The purpose
of the mission trips is to give young
people a different view of life and help
them to understand what real poverty
is like.
"I am hopeful that this experience
will change the way the young people
view life and their current situation,"
Adkins continued. "I am proud to be
an American and I want to help create
better Americans out of our kids and
get them involved with their country."
Adkins' goal to involve the youth in
programs and activities similar to this
mission trip will help reduce the crime
rate, teen pregnancy and overall create
better American citizens.
The golf tournament is the first of
many projects that Kenneth Adkins
Minstries Inc. has lined up for the
coming year. Adkins wants to continue
make an impact on local youth through
a variety of projects and mission trips.

As part of a lecture series coordinat
ed by the Coastal Training Program of
the Sapelo Island National Estuarine
Research Reserve (SINERR), Buddy
Sullivan, Coastal Georgia historian and
SINERR Manager, will present Span
ish Influence on the Georgia Coast on
Thursday, August 6, from 3-4 p.m.
at the Sapelo Island Visitor Center
in Meridian. The program is free and
open to the public.
According to Sullivan, Spanish set
tlement in this region actually began
more than two centimes before the
founding of the English colony of Geor
gia in 1733. Sullivan’s talk will focus on
Spanish activities on the coast as early
as 1526, only 34 years after Colum
bus accidentally discovered the New
World.
The lost colony of Lucas Vasquez
de Ayllon, thought to have been estab
lished in the area of Sapelo Sound, was
the first European settlement in what
became the continental United States,
pre-dating St. Augustine by 39 years.
The program also includes a discus
sion of Spanish Franciscan missions
along the coast, 1570 to 1680, with a
focus on the archaeological work being
done at Mission Santa Catalina on St.
Catherines Island.
Sullivan’s next lecture in the his
torical series, The McIntosh Commer
cial Fishery: Oystering and Shrimp
ing, 1890-1970, will be held Thursday,
October 16, at 3 p.m.
The SINERR Coastal Training Pro
gram provides support, training, and
information to professionals who make
decisions about coastal management
so they can better manage the coastal
resources so vital to their economies
and way of life. More information on
the Coastal Training Program can be
