School board meets

Governor Sonny Perdue.
The purpose of the furlough is to
save state tax money.
Superintendent Howard Mann told
the board that when the Governor
suggested the furlough, the school
administration looked at what the
cost would be to the Glynn system if
they didn't take the three-day unpaid
leave.
He also said there was going to be a
statewide telephone conference to dis
cuss the legal aspects of the furlough.
"But," Mann said, "this is a board
decision."

Road Work
• Blythe Island Bridge
Beginning Monday, August 3, and
extending for 45 consecutive days,
weather permitting, one lane of Blythe
Island Bridge over Interstate 95/ State
Route 405 will be closed by Tidewa-
ter/Skanska as part of the 1-95/ SR 405
construction project reducing the travel
lanes to one. Traffic signals will be used
during this traffic operation. Motorist
should expect heavy delays at this loca
tion and on Blyth Island Road. □
School system Chief Financial Offi
cer (CFO) Andrea Preston said the
furlough would save Glynn $579,673
in teacher salaries.
"That's based on the QBE (Quality
Basic Education) formula for three
days of Glynn teachers' salaries," said
Preston.
But, the CFO added, by eliminating
the traditional summer school next
year, the saving will off-set most of the
cost of not taking the furlough.
Mann said, "Staff recommends not
taking the furlough at this time and
seeing what happens over the next
few weeks."

house, I was stopped by the Georgia
State Patrol and ticketed for not wear
ing my seat belt. I wasn't speeding,
I wasn't driving recklessly, I wasn't
driving under the influence, nor was I
guilty of any other traffic violation.
I was simply not wearing a seat belt
and I was penalized for it.
Note this Freedom Seeker, golf carts
don't have seat belts.
But they do have little platforms on
back where parents almost invariably
put little children. How safe is that?
Uh, not very.
Now, I'm not sure how to address
Freedom Seeker's comments about my
weight other than to say, "Mind your
own freakin' business."
Sure, I'm overweight, but you have
no idea how I live my life or deal with
my weight, so your right to say any
thing about it is non-existent, unless
of course you are perfect, which seems
unlikely, so your comments about my
weight are inappropriate and out of
line.
It's also interesting that my dis
agreeing with Freedom Seeker's opin
ion makes me "bull headed."
Why am I the bull headed one?
I may be mistaken, but I don't think
I've ever called names in this editorial
or insulted those who might disagree
with my point of view.

saying, "We also need to get the tax
digest in before we make any decisions
on this so we will know better where
we stand financially."
The tax digest was due in Atlanta
on July 31.
BOE chairman Millard Allen also
concurred. Allen said, "I think we
should consider rejecting the furlough
unless there are significant problems
with the (tax) digest."
BOE member Jerry Mancil asked
Preston if she knew what was holding
up the tax digest.
Preston said, "I really don't know,
but I do know they are making correc
tions as we speak. There's nothing I
can do about it. But hopefully we will
have it by Wednesday or Friday of
this week. If we get it by Friday, that
will give us time to advertise and hold
the public hearings by the end of our
extension period."
The school board is required to hold
three public hearing on the tax digest
before setting a millage rate.
Allen said, "If the digest is in by the
time Ms. Preston thinks it will be, we
will hold a called meeting on Tuesday,
August 4 at 3:30 just before our facili
ties committee meeting to approve the
dates for the public hearings." □
