THE ISLANDER, AUGUST 24, 2009, PAGE 15 4th Annual Taste of the Vine...and All That Jazz Coastal Coalition for Children will hold the 4th annual “Taste of the Vine...and All That Jazz” on Friday, September 11 from 7-10 p.m. at the Casino on St. Simons Island. The evening will include fine wines, specialty beers, food, a silent auction and music by “The Phil Morrison Trio." The silent auction items include a two night escape to the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, a makeover by James Grel- la at Image Artisans, and many origi nal paintings, etchings and pottery. Gourmet food will be provided by the first graduating class of Harmo ny Cafe and Chef Michael Jenkins, including his award winning Cheese cake Lollipops. The Still on St. Simons Island will provide the wine and Shef field Distributors will provide beer. Non-alcoholic beverages also will be available. Chef Jenkins is Director and Instruc tor for Harmony Kids Learning Center and Harmony Cafe. A native of Atlanta and graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, Atlan ta, Jenkins has worked primarily in a Country Club environment. He relo cated from Marietta Country Club to serve at the Oak Grove Island Golf and Country Club, and also worked with several properties on Jekyll Island. Tickets are $50.00 per person, and can be purchased at the door, or by contacting the Coastal Coalition for Children at (912) 262-1855. Established in 1983, the Coastal Coalition for Children encompasses five separate agencies who singular purpose is the prevention of child abuse and neglect in nine counties in South east Georgia. Programs of the agency include: First Steps Glynn and McIn tosh, Healthy Families of Coastal Geor gia, Youth Advisory Councils, Latin American Resource Center (LARC) and Grandparent Connection and Cus tody Support. Agency programs impact 4,000 people annually. □ Ashantilly to hold ice cream Chum-off The Ashantilly Center will hold their second annual homemade ice cream churn-off competition on Sun day, September 6, from 4-6 p.m. The two competition categories are Individual and Organizations/ Businesses. Prizes will be awarded to individuals in People’s Choice, and Judges’s Picks. Organizations and businesses will be competing for braggin’ rights and their name on The Golden Scoop trophy. Phil King and Bill Owens will perform. King, a Georgia born sing er/songwriter and recording artist, received the Bill Lowery Leadership Award; received two Commendations from the Governor of Georgia and Mayor of Atlanta for his work in the music industry as President of the Georgia Music Industry Association. Art Downtown/Gallery 209 is located at 209 Gloucester Street in Downtown Brunswick. □ NSTIEP SLANDER Sapelo Island Geechees present exhibit in the Old Jail Art Center In preparation for Sapelo Island’s annual Cultural Day on October 17, the McIntosh Art Association and the Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitaliza tion Society are collaborating on an exhibit in the Old Jail Art Center and Museum in downtown Darien. The cultural art work of the Sape lo Island Geechees, on display in the spotlight artist room from now through September 29, includes cast nets, driftwood frames, Geechee dolls, quilts, and sweetgrass baskets. The show's opening reception will be held Wednesday, August 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Deeply influenced by Africanisms indigenous to the Kissi Nation of pres ent day Sierra Leon, the Saltwater Geechees of Sapelo Island have pre served their heritage extensively by passing techniques of a variety of great African ways of survival while convert ing them into economically viable art. The artists learned their skills in Geechee Cultural Art passed down through generations. An interactive art piece has been included in the exhibit so that everyone who visits will have an opportunity to see the full scale vision of the Cultural Interpretive Village while provided the opportunity to contribute directly to the preserva tion of the last intact Geechee/Gullah community in the Georgia Sea Islands through purchases of art. The Old Jail Art Center & Museum, home to the McIntosh Art Association, hosts over 200 pieces of local art as well as a historical museum and is open daily Tuesdays through Satur days 10 am to 4 p.m. Admission is free. SICARS mission is to preserve and revitalize the Hogg Hummock Community which is a McIntosh County Historic District. It is also a National Register of Historic Places site. SICARS was founded in 1993 by Hogg Hummock residents and non resident descendants who want to gain control over the future of their community. Thomas Memorial will be held Saturday, Sep tember 12, 7 p.m. at the Brunswick Shrine Club on 155 Darien Highway in Brims wick.
