Glynn Academy Red Terrors
Football preview
By Joke
After sneaking into the playoffs with
a 5-5 regular season record last season
and being blown out in the first round
by Westside Macon, the Terrors will
aim for a better record and a higher
seed in 2009.
Two big reasons that this could hap
pen: Seniors Chad Sanders (QB) and
Trent Murray (RB).
Murray and Sanders lead a Terror
offense that is relatively inexperienced,
with only two other starters returning.
Glynn Academy (GA) is breaking in
five new starters on the offensive line,
which usually spells trouble, especially
for a run-based offense like Coach Rob
Riding’s Wing-T attack.
This unit might well be the key to
the Terrors’ playoff hopes this season.
If the new O-line can mesh together
and open up holes for Murray and
fullback Chris Woods, GA should be
competitive; if they cannot, it could be
a long season for the Terrors.
GA has a little more experience
on the defensive side of the ball, with
seven starters returning for the Ter
rors. Although the defense is a little
green at linebacker, the secondary and
defensive line have both experience
Harrison
and depth.
On special teams, kicker Ben Fendig
and punter Knox Delaney both return
after successful 2008 campaigns.
As far as their schedule is concerned,
the Terrors should win at least three of
their first four games.
Those games are all against teams
from a lower classification (with the
exception of Bradwell) and should allow
the team a chance to gel before hitting
the meat of their schedule in October.
As always, this season’s biggest
game will be the City Championship
against the Brunswick High Pirates on
October 16.
The Terrors will look to avenge last
season’s 46-26 blowout and should be
able to keep it close this year due to the
graduation of BHS superstar Darius
Slay.
All and all, things are shaping up
well for the 2009 edition of the Red
Terrors.
The two key units are the offensive
line and the linebacking core. If those
emits can play well, or at least well
enough, the Terrors have a good shot
at making a second consecutive playoff
appearance. □
Three Glynn schools honored nationally
for environmental efforts
On Thursday, August 6th, Presi
dent Bill Clinton, American Heart
Association President Dr. Clyde
Yancy and Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation CEO Risa Lavizzo-
Mourey honored Glyndale Elemen
tary, St. Simons Elementary and
Sterling Elementary at the Alliance
for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy
Schools Program Forum in New
York. These schools are three of 114
honorees from across the country
that are transforming their schools
into healthier places for students to
learn and staff to work.
Nearly one in three children and
teens in the United States is obese
or overweight. In response to the epi
demic, the Alliance for a Healthier
Generation — a joint partnership of
the American Heart Association and
the William J. Clinton Foundation
— established the Healthy Schools
Program in 2006 to help schools
develop and implement policies and
practices to promote healthy eating
and increase physical activity. The
Healthy Schools Program provides
free assistance to more than 5,000
schools in all 50 states.
These schools received the Bronze
Healthy Schools Program National
Recognition Award.
The Healthy Schools Program
takes a comprehensive approach
to helping schools create healthier
environments by working with them
to improve access to healthier foods;
increase physical activity opportuni
ties before, during and after school;
enhance nutrition education; and
establish school employee wellness
programs. Support is tailored so that
every school creates its own local
approach that matches the specific
needs of its community.
