GIAHA announces 2009-2010 season
Golden Isles Arts and Humani
ties Association (GIAHA) invites the
community to enter “A World of Mar
vels and Wonders” in the 2009-2010
season at Downtown Brunswick’s
Historic Ritz Theatre beginning in
September.
In addition to the eclectic line-up of
live theater, music, and comedy that
audiences have come to expect from
GIAHA’s Performing Arts Series, the
organization announces an expanded
series of film screenings nearly every
month of the year, as well as stimu
lating visual arts exhibits in the Ritz
gallery space.
Returning in October, it’s a full
month of programming for the very
successful community-wide reading
initiative The Big Read, this time
focusing on the stories and poetry
of the groundbreaking, highly influ
ential American author Edgar Allan
Poe.
The season begins in September
with an art exhibit opening and an
acclaimed documentary film at the
Ritz (as well as the final concert of
the 2009 Jazz in the Park season on
September 20, featuring Savannah
jazz great Ben Tucker).
The Big Read kicks off October 2
with an event for everyone attending
Downtown Brunswick’s First Friday
evening. An exhibit of visual art
interpreting Poe’s tales and poems
will open at the Ritz. Participants
can pick up a “Purloined Letter” with
clues to track in downtown stores
and galleries during the evening.
Those who correctly identify the Poe
story or poem “hidden” in each busi
ness will be eligible for prizes.
At 8:00 that evening, the public can
attend a free screening of The Fall of
the House of Usher (1960), the first
film in the month-long “Roger, Vin
cent, and Edgar Film Series” (clas
sics directed by Roger Corman, star
ring Vincent Price, based on Poe).
The Performing Arts Series also
begins in October with a special per
formance by acclaimed actor and
solo artist Joshua Kane in Tales of
Terror, an evening of “horror and
hilarity” that wraps several of Poe’s
famous stories and elements of his
life into an engaging, frightening,
and humorous performance. Mr.
Kane’s performance also weaves in
classic tales from other famous writ
ers. Tales of Terror is presented at
the Ritz on Friday, October 23, at
8:00 p.m.
Full information about the Per
forming Arts Series, exhibits, The
Big Read, film programming, and
all of GIAHA’s events and services
(including Arts-in-Education pro
grams and special events like the
Old-Fashioned 4th of July and free
military band concerts) is available
on line at www.goldenislesarts.org.
The public can also stop by the Ritz
Theatre, 1530 Newcastle St., Down
town Brunswick, to pick up a season
brochure, or call GIAHA at 912-262-
6934.
Tickets for all Performing Arts
Series shows are available in advance
(prior to the day of the show) either
in person at the Ritz or by calling
with a credit card (Tuesday-Friday 9
am - 5 pm; Saturday 10 am — 2 pm),
or through the secure online PayPal
service at GIAHA’s web site. Admis
sion prices vary by show; audiences
are encouraged to buy tickets in
advance at lower prices than day-of-
show admission. □
