I am taking a trip down memo
ry lane this week as we celebrate
43 years since God moved us to St.
Simons. Billy Jr. had just turned 5,
Beth was 3, Jim was not quite 1 and
John was bom four months later! We
have been greatly blessed by so many
special people who came in - and out
- of our lives over the years.
At the top of our list are The Island
er founders Elise Permar and Teensie
Bradshaw. Our lives were enriched by
time spent with them as they created
this wonderful paper. I am in awe of
what they were able to do before the
days of computers when everything
was done on a typewriter and clip art
covered the floor around Teensie's desk
where the paper was pasted together.
Pew News is the result of an evening
of talking about new ideas for the
paper when I opened my big mouth
and suggested a church news column!
Thank you, dear readers, for your
encouragement and kind words.

My trip down memory lane is impor
tant as a reminder of God's love and
care as He directed our paths and I am
confident the best is yet to be!

View historical objects not usually
on display to the public
In 2008, the Coastal Georgia His
torical Society (CGHS) completed its
state of the art vault designed to
house the photographs, artifacts, and
documents that preserve the history
of coastal Georgia. Now, for the first
time, the public has a chance to dis
cover some of the historic objects not
seen on a typical tour of the historical
society’s museums.
On Tuesday, September 22, 4 p.m.
the first in a series of presentations
by curator Jenny Herring will bring
to light the 1891 Tybee Regatta Cup.
This stunning silver trophy was won
by Brunswick harbor pilot Duncan
Wright, captain of the yacht Gracie.
Visitors will hear about the tension
and excitement of this popular race,
and learn about boating culture in
the turn-of-the-century Golden Isles.
Those attending the presentation
series will also get a chance to uncover
some of the “behind the scenes” work
of the archives and museum. Topics
explored will include why certain
objects are important to preserve,
and how they become part of the
Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s
collection.
Herring will also explore some of
the ways in which an object like the
Tybee Regatta Cup can help us learn
more about the time and place in
which it is created.
This ongoing series of presenta
tions will take place on the third
Tuesday of the month in the A. W.
Jones Heritage Center at 620 Beach-
view Drive on St. Simons Island.
Admission is free for members of the
Coastal Georgia Historical Society
and $10 for nonmembers. Call 912-
638-4666 for information. □
