A tale of two
liquor licenses
By Matthew J. Permar
Last week, in something of
a precedent breaking action,
the Glynn Comity Commission
granted an alcoholic beverage
license for a location that has
been denied licenses on four
different occasions in the past.
Brunswick businessman
Pankajkumar Patel applied for
two alcoholic beverage licenses
for different stores during the
March 18 commission meet
ing.
One for an Altama Ave.
address and the other for the
Beer and Tobacco Express
at 1182 Chapel Crossing Rd.
directly across the street from
the main entrance to the Fed
eral Law Enforcement Train
ing Center (FLETC).
Both applications were met
with public opposition.
Patel withdrew his applica
tion for the Altama Ave. store
in the face of the opposition.
The commission approved
the license for the Chapel
Crossing Rd. location.
Since the mid-1990’s four
different business owners have
applied for licenses in the Cha
pel Crossing Rd. strip center
across from FLETC and every
one was turned down.
The precedent was set for
the Chapel Crossing Rd. loca
tion with the first application,
for a package store, that was
opposed by members of two
nearby churches, the Bruns
wick Christian Academy, also
nearby, and area residents.
The location met all the
requirements to legally be
granted a license. But based
on the volume of public opposi
tion the commission denied the
license citing a section in their
ordinance that gives them
the authority to deny a liquor
license if they believe it will
be detrimental to the general
health and welfare of the sur
rounding area.
The package store was fol

County seeks
federal help for
SPUR extension
By Matthew J. Permar
About a half a mile before
you reach the Glynn Coun
ty Public Safety complex on
SPUR 25, the four lane road
narrows to two lanes and stays
that way the rest of the way
through to its intersection with
Hwy. 99.
As the area grows and traf
fic on the road increases, so
does the Glynn County Com
mission's concern for motor
ists' safety.
A project to extend the
SPUR north to Hwy. 99 has
been in the planning stages for
ten years and now the Glynn
County Commission is asking
the federal government for
funding assistance to get the
road constructed.
