McIntosh County Shouters receive Governor’s Award
The McIntosh County Shouters are
recipients of the 2010 Georgia Gover
nor’s Award in the Humanities. This
highly competitive award recognizes
individuals and organizations who are
“doing exemplary work in the humani
ties and encourages them to serve as
models for others across the state.”
The 25th Governor’s Awards in the
Humanities is set for Tuesday, May 11
at the Old Georgia Railroad Freight
Depot in downtown Atlanta. Awards
will be presented during a lunch honor
ing the winners.
The Shouters are the last practi
tioners of the authentic ring shout. A
narrator begins the performance by
introducing the various members of
the group: the stickman, who keeps
cadence and maintains the rhythm of
the shouts; the bassers and clappers,
whose voices and clapping contribute
to the layers of the songs that are
“shouted”; and finally, the “shouters”,
the women who shuffle their feet in
a counterclockwise movement while
singing the various “shouts”. The back-
story to the songs are explained by the
narrator introduces the songs/shouts.
The Shouters have been invited
to perform at the Kennedy Center
(December 1,6 p.m.) and at the Library
of Congress (December 2, noon).
“We are honored to be recognized in
our home state for sharing the legacy
that has been passed down to us,” said
Shouter Carletha Sullivan. “The Gov
ernor’s Award in the Humanities is a
great honor; our ancestors would be
very proud.”
Educating children about the Gullah
Geechee culture is a very important
priority to the Shouters. “We love to
perform at schools because we are
reaching out to the very youngest gen
eration that way,” said Shouter Venus
Mclver, “It is by educating children
about our culture that we can keep our
heritage alive.”
In addition to receiving the Gov
ernor’s Award, the Shouters recently
received a Founders’ Day award from
the NAACP in honor of their continu
ing the tradition of the ring shout. This
ethnic custom has been performed for
over 250 years and the Shouters are
the last of the authentic ring shout
groups.
The Shouters is a 501 (c) (3) non
profit organization and it relies on
donor generosity to allow them to visit
schools and teach this rich culture.
Donations may be sent to: The McIn
tosh County Shouters, 2126 GA HWY

TIME FOR WATER CONSERVATION
Ready to conserve water? Ready to perhaps save money on your water
bill? Here are some tips to help your family use water more responsibly.
Let’s begin with sprinkler use. To make your sprinklers as efficient as
possible, try to use them during the morning or evening hours.
Install a rain sensor on your irrigation controller. Plant drought
resistant plants. Make sure when washing dishes you limit the water
use; soapy water on one side of the kitchen sink; clean water on the other
side for rinsing.
When washing clothes, look for Energy Star rated appliances that use
30 to 50 percent less water. Always check the water level to be sure your
load size matches the load setting. Clean driveways with a broom instead
of a hose or power washer.
Next, consider low-flush toilets. Newer, efficient toilets use around 1.6
gallons a flush, as opposed to 3.5 with standard toilets. Look into using
a water-efficient showerhead. They can be easy to install. Finally, check
your swimming pool for leaks. They can be hard to find. Your pool service
can give you tips on this maintenance feature.

Suicide

cides.
There were 35 suicide calls to the
police station in the first three months
of 2010 compared to 29 in the first
three months of 2009.
Annual totals for calls was 114 for
2009, 115 for 2008, 91 for 2007, 65 for
2006.
At the current rate, the county police
can expect 140 suicide calls this year.
“The economy tanked in 2008,” said
Doering, “and now we’re getting record
numbers of suicides and suicide calls.
And we’ll likely continue to get more
calls and more suicides. I’m afraid it’s
the bad economy. I know that this is a
speculative statement, but it is my first
inclination.”
Doering went on to say that the
economy is certainly not the only rea
son.
“It’s not the sole factor,” said Doer
ing, “other factors include medical rea
sons, personal and family issues, drug
and alcohol abuse, depression. But I
would think that for the majority, from
the reports I’ve been getting, the econ
omy has more bearing, but the others
factors are still there.”
For people who may be contem
plating suicide Doering said there is
always a better solution, that help is
out there.
With no local suicide hotline, Doer
ing said the best place to get help can
be found on the first page of the Bell-
south® telephone book, the National
Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-
8255.
“These national prevention folks
have called us in the past,” explained
Doering, “to tell us they received a call
from a local resident and asked us to
send an officer by to do a welfare check
to make sure the person is OK”
Thaw agreed with Doering about
the need to seek help before people’s
problems get to the point of a suicide
attempt.
“I noticed after it happened to sev
eral of my friends and acquaintances,”
said Thaw, “So I decided to do some
investigating and spoke to Chief Doer
ing. That’s when I learned the rate is
going up. I know a lot of it is the eco
nomic times we’re in, but people need
to know there’s always somewhere to
go, someone to call.” □
