Page 6, January 5, 2015, The Islander Superintendent Mary Beth Wester retires Mary Beth Wester, Superintendent of Fort Frederica National Monument, retired from the National Park Service on December 31,2014. She is a 30-year NPS veteran. “Mary Beth has been an excellent steward of Fort Frederica and a great public servant,” said Southeast Re gional Director Stan Austin. “In addi tion to her work in parks, she was also an important contributor to many in cident management teams, including the Hurricane Katrina Response and the Bicentennial of the Birth of Abra ham Lincoln. We are grateful for her many years of service.” Mary Beth began her career in 1985 and has held many varied positions in the agency in West Virginia, Utah, Missouri and Indiana. In 2007 Mary Beth was selected as Superintendent of Fort Frederica National Monument. She served as a special event staff member for the National Park Ser vice’s December 7th USS Arizona Com memoration and Survivors Reunion in Hawaii, at the 60th (2001) and 65th (2006) commemorations. As a member of the Eastern Inci dent Management Team from 2005 to 2014, Mary Beth was involved in many significant events, including the re sponses to Hurricanes Katrina, Irene and Sandy. Locally, Mary Beth has been ac tively involved in St. Simons Island Rotary Club since 2007. She reads to Burroughs-Mollette pre-K children each week as part of Rotary outreach. In 2012 she was honored when selected as one of the YMCA’s Tribute to Women Leaders. “It has been an honor and a privi lege to work for this incredible agency over the last 30 years,” Mary Beth said. “I have met many people, visited wonderful areas, worked at incredible, precious sites, helped a few visitors and staff along the way and made a great many friends across the U.S. and abroad. I believe the success of tills agency is in the hands of all employees as well as area stakeholders. We must keep the NPS mission always present in their mind. It is not an easy task, but the reward is well worth the effort.” In retirement, Mary Beth plans to “hang out” with her husband, Randy Wester, who retired two years ago as the Super intendent of Fort Pulaski National Monument. The couple will enjoy their crew of dogs and cats as well as pursuing Mary Beth Wester their inter ests of scuba diving, kay aking, motorcycling, and gardening.
