December 11,2017, The Islander, Page 7 LHS holds Hurricane Irma relief drive for GA studens Recently, Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga., held a Hurricane Irma relief drive for students at Glynn Academy. As a result of the drive, the school raised $1,000 and filled an en tire SUV with much-needed cleaning supplies to help Glynn Academy stu dents in their recovery efforts. The donation was initiated by Brunswick native and Glynn Academy graduate Beth Linkenhoker Baker, who is a sixth-grade social studies de partment chair at Pine Grove Middle School in Valdosta.. After Hurricane Irma pummeled much of the Golden Isles, Baker reached out to Dr. Heath Horton, mathematics department head at Glynn Academy, and asked what Lowndes High could do to help Glynn Academy students and families affected by the storm. With Sparrows Nest’s shelves all but depleted and numerous students displaced from their homes, the Val dosta school saw a need and went into action. Baker’s son, Pierce, who is a sophomore at Lowndes High School, along with several other students spent an entire month doing fundrais ers and supply drives - support and guidance of the faculty at LHS - to col lect $1,000 and an SUV full of clean ing supplies.
