The margin of open space is now way wid er than before and puddles and weeds are in the place where mature Geor gia pines were just a few months ago. Oncoming traffic is now more exposed as is commercial signage for places like Truckstops America or the Pilot travel center or any of the numerous fast food restaurants on 1-95. Deforestation on 1-16 has perhaps been even worse. I recently drove to Atlanta via 1-16 and the degree of de forestation in the median is absurd. 1-16 used to be a pleasant drive and made you feel as if you were in a for est. The natural landscape was promi nent and relaxing. Now, many of the huge forested medians, some of which look like 200- 300 yards wide or more, have been clear cut. And it hasn’t stopped there. Trees and vegetation in the islands formed by on and off ramps have also been clear cut. I wrote Buddy Carter about this concern and received in re ply what I think is a generic form let ter. He said that since 247 trees fell during Irma and Matthew, all of the above deforestation was necessary. This seems way over the top to me. It also is a waste of tax payer money and is bad for the environment like most deforestation. And on top of ev erything else the drive is physically hotter because there is no shade. I do not recall any referendum on this decision. I will forward Rep Carter’s reply, but please feel free to reprint his re ply or contact me or disseminate and make this issue known any way you feel appropriate. It has been frus trating and sad to watch our natural Georgia pine landscape be destroyed like this. Sincerely, Ryan Rentz Ryan - Matthew and I feel your pain. The Ga DOT is doing this, not just in our area, but state wide. I have traveled to Jacksonville sev eral times during the past month and it’s brutal. The beautiful median in Camden County is being chopped to smithereens. It’s hard to look at. They are taking the hardwoods as well as the pines. Where the DOT cleared Highway 17 South at the Brunswick Port is nothing but water and nasty looking mud. It seems a total waste of money to me and extremely dangerous for the workers who are doing the cutting and hauling away. I have tried to get info from the DOT but to no avail.
