Once the reimbursements are made the funds will be made available to the World War II Museum Continued from Page 1 Through the efforts of CLPS, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. CLPS merged with the Coastal Geor gia Historical Society in 2001. The main building was rehabilitated and opened as a maritime museum by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society in 2006. After the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s successful ‘Victory Campaign,’ a fund raiser chaired by Duane Harris that raised $4 million for the museum’s renovation, work began on the project in earnest and the result is the World War II Home Front Museum. The Coastal Georgia home front story reflects the experience of many Americans during World War II - civil defense activities such as blackouts, food rationing and buying war bonds, and sending sons and daughters off to join the nation’s military. In other ways, Glynn County was City to complete the project at another site. The 2016 MOU amendment states that out of the original budgeted $2 million, $1,557,619.87 remains in the SPLOST IV account. The difference was spent on property preparation, demoli tion, planning, and engineering services. The 2016 amendment further states: “However, any such SPLOST reimburse ment and payment to the County for the fair market value of the property shall not permit the City to abandon or fail to complete the project, and the City must unique. It was the location of three crit ical wartime facilities: an airship base (Naval Air Station (NAS) Glynco), a ra dar training school (NAS St. Simons at McKinnon Airport), and the J.A. Jones Liberty shipyard in Brunswick. The Georgia coast also experienced a devastating German U-boat attack on April 8, 1942, when U-boat 123 torpe doed two tankers just 13 miles off the coast of St. Simons Island, killing 22 merchant mariners and covering the beach with oil for weeks after. The new museum will help educate today’s children about the greatest gen eration and about how the local com munity came together for the defense of a nation. Gallagher & Associates, an interna tionally recognized museum planning and design firm with offices in Wash ington, D.C., New York, and San Fran cisco, developed the museum concepts and layout. Rob Citino, Ph.D., the Senior Histo rian at the National World War II Mu seum in New Orleans, was the keynote speaker at Saturday morning’s event. otherwise still complete the Ogletho rpe Center project consistent with this Agreement, SPLOST IV and SPLOST V and applicable SPLOST law.” The 2016 amendment gives the city three years from the quitclaim deed date to substantially complete the conference center.
