Soccer group balks at Paulk Park fees By Matthew J. Permar Years ago, before Glynn County took over the operation of the city’s Howard Coffin recreation park, the city signed a Memorandum of Un derstanding (MOU) with Shawn Williams of Coastal Outreach Soc cer (COS) allowing the organization to use the large athletic field at no charge. Coastal Outreach is a non-profit organization that provides soccer in struction, league play, and camps to Glynn County children. The program is open to all kids but focuses on kids living in downtown Brunswick who may not have access to soccer pro grams which are further outside the city limits. When the county took over the op eration of Coffin Park in January of 2013 they agreed to honor the city’s MOU with COS and continue allow ing the soccer program to use the park at no cost. Last week (Tues. Feb. 26), the Glynn County Finance Commit tee was hesitant to approve another MOU with COS that would allow the group to use the newly renovat ed Paulk Park recreation facility on Wylly Ave. in Arco. County staff recommended charg ing the standard $25 an hour fee for the park. COS’s executive director Shawn Williams wanted the same deal at Paulk Park that he has at Coffin Park. But finance committee members Bill Brunson (Dist. 4) and David O’Quinn (Dist. 2) were concerned if they allowed Coastal Outreach to use Paulk Park for free, other private athletic programs would want the same treatment. Finance Committee chairman Al len Booker (Dist. 5) disagreed and said Coastal Outreach has been in volved with the Paulk Park renova tion since the beginning and felt they should be able to use it without pay ing a fee. Williams stated he did not want special treatment and withdrew from participation in the MOU. And as of Wednesday, Williams told county recreation staff that he was no longer interested in the MOU for Paulk Park. The County received a donation of $28,000 from Rebuilding Together of Glynn County and an in-kind dona tion valued at $10,500 from the Sea Island Foundation to renovate the Paulk Park field in 2018. The balance of the renovation cost (approximately $6,300, not including grading and clearing work performed by the County’s Public Works Depart ment, was paid by the County. The County has allocated $183,000 for Paulk Park Phase 2 to construct a restroom and playground at the park. Rental fees help offset expenses associated with costs of ongoing maintenance of the field and facilities including mowing and irrigation of the field.
