I ask you to vote no.” On another subject Sabee also asked the commission to finish a master site plan for Mary Ross Park. “The park is a huge asset. The (planned) splash pad and playground equipment (which is already installed) limits the development and use of the park,” Sabee said. “Please hold off on the splash pad until the master site plan is finished.” The city commission awarded the splash pad and playground equipment contract to Great Southern Recreation for $321,020 last September. The play ground equipment arrived unexpect edly late last November and the Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA) held a called meeting to choose a layout for the equipment. The splash pad is expected to arrive sometime this spring. Several members of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club also spoke about a mas ter plan for Mary Ross Park. The Kiwanis Club holds its major fundraiser, the Brunswick Stewbilee, in Mary Ross Park every year. And last year the Department of Natural Resources’ Coastal Resources Division held its annual CoastFest event in the park for the first time. Mike Parrish, Kiwanis president, asked the commission to consider that the Stewbilee was held every year in Mark Ross Park and brings in about one quarter of the annual funds Ki wanis gives back to the children of the community. Rick Townsend, also a Brunswick Kiwanis member, said this year’s turn out was the best since 2009 or 2010. “Attendance is increasing,” Townsend said. “We would also like to be at the table when the Park’s master plan decision is made.” Kiwanis members have stated their concerns in the past to the URA that the splash pad and playground equipment will limit space in the park for events. Members are also concerned and that trucks bringing in the large tents used at these events will not be able to access the grounds because of the splash pad and playground equipment. Teeple Hill, chairman of the Stew bilee committee, commented that Mary Ross Park was a premium event space. “Installing the splash pad in the Park would severely hamper what we do and would probably stop the Stewbilee,” he said. Hill also mention that URA chair man LaRon Bennett had not spoken to Coastal Resources Division about CoastFest as it pertains to Mary Ross Park. Hill asked that the Park be preserved as an event space for community use. There was no discussion among commission members concerning the Park’s master plan. • In other business the city ap proved a short term lease with St. Francis Xavier Church for the city’s va cant building at 503 Mansfield St. The Church is renovating the St. Francis School on Union St. and will lease the building from the city for nine months at $4,000 per month. The lease includes three one month extension options. • The city approved three Condition al Use Permits: 2716 Norwich Street, for Open Yard Storage of Vehicles; 3125 Lee Street for Auto Repair; 3028 Nor wich Street for Open Yard Storage of rental trucks. • Mayor Cornell Harvey told the commission he would like to name the G St. Park after former comity coroner Abe Brown. Brown died in January. A Resolution will be presented at the next city commission meeting to name the park for Brown.
