Ernie Andrus (second from right) is a 95-year-old World War II veteran who is planning to run across the United States for the second time in five years. This photo is from 2016 coming across the Sidney Lanier Bridge with a group of supporters as he neared the end of his first trek from San Diego to St. Simons. A medic for the Navy during World War II, Andrus’ journey across the country started with a mission - to preserve and make money for the LST 325 Ship Memorial Inc. LST 325 is a World War II vessel that Andrus helped get from the Isle of Crete, Greece to the U. S. in 2000. According to Sports 360AZ®, Andrus’ story was documented on the History Channel in a series called “The Return of LST 325.” The ship is now docked in Evansville, Indiana. Andrus is raising money to keep the boat preserved and move it back to Omaha Beach in Normandy, where it was located during D-Day. The LST 325 is the only ship of its kind that is still operational. Andrus begins his second trip on Saturday morning, March 16 at 9:00 at the St. Simons Coast Guard Station beach. If you want to walk with him, you must arrive early and sign a waiver.
