The Jekyll Island Authority’s Shrimp
& Grits Festival won the Best Festival
Award, along with three other awards,
at the Southeast Festivals & Events As
sociation’s Kaleidoscope Awards, Feb.
26.
The awards celebrate events through
out the Southeast for their outstanding
contributions to the industry and are
part of SFEA’s annual convention, held
this year in Pigeon Forge, Term.
“We are honored to be selected for
the Best Festival Award from among
more than 200 festivals in five states,”
said Nancy Kring-Rowan, director of
events at the JIA.
“Our team’s dedication and imagina
tion make the Shrimp and Grits Festi
val a memorable event for our guests
every year. It’s gratifying to see their
hard work recognized in this way.”
The Shrimp & Grits Festival also won
gold awards for Best Festival or Event
Website and Best Promotional Poster
Award, and a bronze award for Best
Print Ad. The judges looked for original
ity, creativity, media impact, volunteer
programs, and the overall impact to the
community, according to Lisa McCray,
executive director for SFEA.
“The quality of submissions contin
ues to increase each year making it
more difficult for the judges to select the
winners,” she said. “Of course, to ‘win
gold,’ becomes all the sweeter when
there is additional competition and the
recognition a festival receives for win
ning is priceless.”
The 2019 Shrimp & Grits Festival
is scheduled for Sept. 20-22. A coastal
favorite, it combines the classic south
ern dish with family-friendly entertain
ment, artists market, live music, kids’
zone, food, a craft brew fest, and more.
Glynn Comity’s airports staff were
well represented at the first quarterly
Board of Directors meeting of the Geor
gia Airports Association (GAA) Febru
ary 19-20 in Atlanta. The GAA Board
met with legislators and addressed a
variety of issues, including the need for
funding aviation projects throughout
the state.
This quarterly meeting highlighted
the importance of aviation to the en
tire state by providing a wide range
of services to the citizens of Georgia.
The group also reviewed the recently
released Georgia Statewide Aviation
System Plan, available to the public at
dot.ga.gov/IS/AirportAid/Aviation Sys-
temPlan. The plan identifies die needs
of Georgia’s airports outside the Harts-
field-Atlanta International Airport, and
examines progressive elements and ac
complishments widiin the system.
“Aviation is crucial to Georgia’s econ
omy, and serves all areas of the state,“
Glynn County Airport Commission Ex
ecutive Director Robert Burr pointed
out. “Not only does it create jobs and pro
duce revenue, it gives access to medical
services, assists law enforcement, pro
tects our environment widi forest man
agement and fire control and performs
lifesaving search and rescue operations.
In times of natural disaster, aviation
has saved both lives and property. Avia
tion works for all of our citizens, even if
they never step on board an airplane.”
Money Magazine,
ranks Jekyll Island
Number One
Money magazine ranks Jekyll Is
land as No. 1 among U.S. travel des
tinations on its list of “The 20 Best
Places to Go in 2019.” The top rank
ing follows the island’s selection for
the second position on a list of “19
best beaches for families and kids,” by
NBC-TV’s “Today” program last week.
Also in February, Jekyll’s Driftwood
Beach was designated as the No. 10
beach in the country in TripAdvisor’s
2019 Travelers’ Choice Awards.
Money lauded Jekyll as a “tucked-
away gem” offering “the best of near
by historic Savannah and Florida
beaches.” The island has experienced
a 28.6 increase in visitation over the
last five years, has a $700 million im
pact on Glynn County alone, supports
more than 7,000 jobs, and generates
$29 million in tax revenues for local
government.
“Accolades like these demonstrate
the significant economic boost Jekyll
provides not just to the Georgia coast,
but to the entire region,” said Jekyll
Island Authority Executive Director
Jones Hooks. “We are pleased to see
Jekyll Island continuing to garner na
tional recognition for its unique blend
of character, culture, history, and ecol
ogy. It underscores the importance of
our mission to preserve and protect
the island’s historic and natural re
sources, while at the same time wel
coming new and returning visitors.”
Money employed a rigorous meth
odology “featuring more than 43,000
data points collected from dozens of
sources,” including the travel book
ing site Kayak. The cost and quality of
nearly 750 popular destinations were
evaluated to determine which offered
value and “activities and amenities
that make vacations memorable.”
Jekyll’s beautiful ecosystems, eight
miles of beaches, and 20 miles of
trails, make it a place where “nature
lovers will feel right at home,” accord
ing to Money. The Jekyll Island Na
tional Landmark Historic District is
also cited among the island’s unique
places to explore.
