April 8, 2019, The Islander, Page 3 Coastal Community Health and SGHS collaborate to enhance healthcare access for uninsured patients Southeast Georgia Health Sys tem has always provided health care services for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. As such, in align ment with its mission, in 2011 the Health System assumed responsibil ity for Coastal Medical Access Project (CMAP). CMAP was originally formed in 1999 by Henri C. Woodman, county commissioner and local philanthro pist, when there was no access to health care for patients that were uninsured. In upcoming months, the Health System will wind down services cur rently offered at CMAP and transition patients to Coastal Community Health Services, Inc., a federally qualified health center located in Brunswick. Coastal receives federal funding to treat uninsured and underinsured individuals. “Patients are able to access health care services at Coastal Commu nity Health Services on a sliding fee scale based on their income level,” said Michael D. Scherneck, president and CEO, Southeast Georgia Health System. “Essentially, they are filling the need that was the initial vision of CMAP.” Scherneck added that Coastal will offer patients access to health care re sources, including primary care, den tal, vision and behavioral health ser vices, and expanded services hours to better meet their needs. “Coastal Community Health Ser vices has offered health care services to uninsured and low income patients in Glynn County for more than five years,” said Barbara Meyers, CEO, Coastal Community Health. “Tran sitioning CMAP patients to Coastal will reduce duplicate efforts and help to ensure that patients are able to access the services they need. It will also decrease unnecessary emergency room visits for services that we can provide.” The Health System will work col- laboratively with Coastal to transition patients and ensure they continue to receive the referrals they need for specialty practices operated by the Health System. Business Update Coastal region posts strong February In the two-month cycle of January and February, Coastal region posted monthly gains in labor force and em ployed residents. The unemployment rate fell in February. The unemployment rate inched up in early 2019. The rate climbed 0.8 percentage points in January but then fell by 0.5 percentage points in Feb ruary, settling at 3.9 percent. A year ago, the rate was 4.2 percent. Nationally, the rate for February was 3.8 percent. The labor force grew in January by 289 and grew in February by another 458. The February total was 333,283. That number is down by 681 from the total from February 2018. Sea Island debuts new State-of-the-Art Golf Performance Center Sea Island, a Forbes Five-Star re sort, has unveiled an all-new, state- of-the-art Golf Performance Center at the Sea Island Golf Club. The new facility further solidifies Sea Island as home to the finest golf instructional center in the country. The 17,000-square-foot facility fea tures industry-leading technology, six instruction and club fitting bays, a putting studio designed by world- renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon - who serves as Director of Putting Instruction at Sea Island - a full-service golf club workshop, gym with locker rooms, spacious retail area, and indoor and outdoor meeting and event spaces. The debut of the new Golf Perfor mance Center is part of a nearly $30 million enhancement program at The Lodge at Sea Island. The new 18-hole Driftwood putting course, designed by Davis and Mark Love, opened in 2018, adding a fresh dimension to Sea Island’s legendary golf experience. In November 2018, The Lodge in troduced six new cottages with 14 new sleeping rooms, a new oceanfront pool, pool house, extended practice fa cility and short game area, all over looking the Atlantic. Capping the program is the rede sign and renovation of the Plantation Course, which along with the signa ture Seaside Course serves as the site of the annual RSM Classic, a PGA TOUR FedEx Cup tournament hosted by Sea Island touring professional and resident Davis Love III. Love Golf Design is overseeing the renovation, which began in November 2018 and will reopen ahead of the 2019 RSM Classic this fall.
