Another person has jumped their death off the Sid- n e y Lanier Bridge. This time in a family known to me. A bridge I can see from my house, in my eyes a thing of beauty, a gigantic structure that somehow blends into its surrounding, being used as a instrument of death. Unfortunately, this is not the first time someone has jumped to their death. An article in the Brunswick News dated Jan. 13, 2013 stated that seven people have jumped to their death since the bridge’s completion. Another article dated Jan. 13, 2017 added two more in a week’s time. There may be more. How can this great community continually allow this to happen? It is just too easy a way to let one take their own life. What would I do different, I thought. First, I would put cameras in place so that the bridge could be moni tored and police alerted to a possible jumper. It would also help reconstruct an incident if one should happen. I would put sensors to alert police that a car was stopped on the bridge along with a speaker system that could be used to communicate with a possible jumper until help could ar rive. I would add suicide prevention phones and signage along the bridge. We have all heard of someone being “talked down” in a suicide situation. Lastly I think I would install a low profile lighting system that would light the roadway without lighting the area outside the bridge. The new Wainwright Baseball park has such a LED lighting system that illuminates the park but can hardly be seen when outside of the park. I do not know if lighting would help but it certainly would make monitoring the bridge at night easier. City, County, DOT, Public Heath officials and citizens of Glynn County, we have to do something, we are just to good of a community to let this go on. Hal Hart Brunswick Mr. Hart along with several oth ers spoke to the City Commission Wednesday, April 3 about suicide pre vention measures on the Sidney Lani er Bridge. The City approved a resolu tion that evening requesting that the Georgia Dept, of Transportation insti tute suicide prevention measures on the Sidney Lanier Bridge. The County Commission has ap proved the same resolution.s Calendar -April 11, 2019 630 pm Cinema Gourmet: The Princess Bride. Food. Talk.
