State officials call for Insurance Commissioner's resignation May 20, 2019, The Islander, Page 3 siness Update Last week several Georgia State of ficials called for the resignation of In surance Commissioner Jim Beck fol lowing Beck’s indictment by a federal grand jury on 38 counts. Both Gov. Brian Kemp and Sec retary of State Brad Raffensperger made statements to that effect last week. “Accusations of fraud and money laundering are serious in their own right, but funneling those illicit funds into campaign coffers to attempt to influence an election is even more appalling,” said Secretary Raffens perger. “As Georgia’s Chief Elections Officer, and because every Georgia voter has a right to fair elections, I call on Commissioner Beck to resign immediately.” Beck is charged with fraud and money laundering to fund his per sonal finances and 2018 campaign for Insurance Commissioner and has surrendered to federal authorities and suspended himself from office. Gov. Kemp called for the resigna tion of Georgia’s insurance commis sioner Wednesday after Beck was indicted on federal charges of wire fraud, mail fraud and money laun dering stemming from alleged crimes prior to his election. Gov. Kemp sent a letter to Beck, asking him to resign his post as Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner. “Your indictment severely under mines your ability to fulfill your offi cial obligations to the people of Geor gia,” Kemp wrote. “I ask that you do what is right for our state and step down immediately.” Beck’s attorney, William “Bill” Thomas, would not comment on Kemp’s letter. Thomas has said his client is innocent. Beck, 57, pleaded not guilty last Wednesday to the 38-count indict ment that accuses him of devising an elaborate fraudulent invoicing scheme to defraud his employer out of more than $2 million over a five-year period just prior to his election in November. The judge imposed a $25,000 bond and Beck is not allowed to leave the state without permission. He is banned him from conducting business with his former employer, the Georgia Underwriters Association, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported . Beck, a Republican, sent a letter to Gov. Kemp and asked to be suspended pending the outcome of his case. Kemp signed an order suspending Beck, and the governor is expected to name a temporary replacement. Beck will continue to draw a $120,000 commissioner’s salary. Compiled, from several news sources. Board of Elections names finalist candidate Last week (May 14) the Glynn County Board of Elections and Registration released the name of Christopher Channell as the finalist candidate for the position of Supervisor of Elections and Registration. Channell has been serv ing as interim supervisor since December. The board must give 14 days’ notice to allow for the public to comment be fore voting to hire Channell.
