Frederica Academy,
she received awards
for drawing before
earning a BA in
Journalism at UNC-
Chapel Hill. “My art
exploration parallels my faith,” she
states. “There’s no end, but the ongo
ing reward is revelation that helps
me know myself, the world, and my
God more fully.”
Lawing’s exploration continued
in stained glass, ceramics and pas
tels, before she began oil painting in
2014. “I paint because it engages my
senses, my mind, my soul, and stirs
an unmatched passion in me. My aim
is visual poetry: simultaneously elu
sive and evocative, speaking life to
the viewer’s soul.”

Linda Lanter’s exploration into
art began with the Jekyll Island Art
Association in 2012. Leaving much
of her family in Ohio, she arrived
in Brunswick feeling lonely and de
pressed and sought solace by taking
a class in Pine Needle Basket Weav
ing. “I had never seen a pine needle
basket before,” she says, “but I soon
found my new love.”
After taking the basic course,
Lanter was hooked on basket weav
ing. She bought books, visited web

into a studio for
basketry, pottery,
fused glass jewel
ry, and painting.
“Sometimes,” she
says, “we get so
low we have to climb out of our sor
row, pick up and start anew.”
Lanter uses artificial sinew to
weave and strengthen her basket
coils of Long Leaf Pine needles. “All
my baskets are sturdy, useful and
pretty, she says,
lifetime.” Married to the writer Steve
Lanter, Linda shares her artistic
skills by teaching classes at Goodyear
Cottage. “Art has filled all the lonely
places in my life and gives me great
pleasure.”

land Arts Association’s June exhibit
at the Goodyear Cottage on Jekyll Is
land, June 1-30. An artists’ reception,

Great music in a perfect setting
will take place at Sounds by the Sea
on Sunday, May 26 with Motown and
More with the Sam Rodriguez Band.
The concert takes place at Neptune
Park (Oceanside of the Casino Build
ing) on St Simons Island from 7 pm to
9 pm.
The Sam Rodriguez Band (or SR-
Music) will have concert-goers danc
ing on the lawn with their infectious
Motown and Soul era music with a
repertoire that includes hits from Nat
King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Louis Arm
strong, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye,
The Temptations and more! They have
played around the country as well as
in the Golden Isles and have had the
honor of performing and/or recording
with a variety of well known artists in
cluding Aretha Franklin, Curtis May-
field, Gladys Knight and many more.
Talented musicians make up the band,
which is lead by percussionist Sam
Rodriguez who has performed on local
and national TV and has been featured
on local and Internet radio. Sounds by
the Sea is presented by Golden Isles
Arts and Humanities at Neptune Park
directly behind the Casino building.
Admission payable at the gate the
night of each show, is $10 for adults.
Children ages 6 to 12 are $5, and under
