June 24, 2019, The Islander, Page 3 BHS graduate awarded 2019 Ga Pacific scholarship More than $12 Million Awarded Since Program Inception Alexandria (Lexie) Blake, a 2019 graduate of Brunswick High School has been selected as a recipient of a Georgia-Pacific Foundation Employ ees’ Children Scholarship. This fall, Alexandria will attend the Lexie Blake University of Georgia and major in po litical science. She plans to ultimately earn a law degree and practice envi ronmental law. While at Brunswick High, Alex andria was active in the BETA club and National Honor Society, served on the cheerleading squad and track team and was the 2019 senior class president. Alexandria is the daughter of Kris tina Blake of Brunswick and Gene Blake of Vidalia. Kristina is employed as a process safety manager at Geor- gia-Pacific’s Brunswick Cellulose mill. “We’re always excited at Bruns wick Cellulose to recognize the suc cess of our employees and their fami lies,” said Jerry Floyd, vice president and general manager at the Bruns wick Cellulose mill. “Lexie’s work ethic, passion to excel, and academic achievements have prepared her well for the next step in her life and we wish her continued success in her aca demic career.” The Georgia-Pacific Foundation Scholarship Program for Employees’ Children awards $2,000 per year for up to four years of full-time college undergrad uate study or until baccalau reate degree requirements are completed, whichever occurs first, for a total maxi mum award of $8,000. This year, Georgia-Pacific awarded $384,000, which will be distributed to 48 stu dents across the country. Since the scholarship pro gram began in 1988, Georgia- Pacific has awarded nearly 1,600 scholarships totaling more than $12 million. The program is administered by the National Merit Scholar ship Corporation and is open to children of all active, full time employees of Georgia- Pacific in the United States. More than 200 applications were received this year. “Georgia-Pacific is very proud to offer this scholar ship program to our employees’ chil dren,” said Curley M. Dossman, Jr., president of the Georgia-Pacific Foun dation. “The students’ hard work, academic achievements and persever ance are a reflection of their promis ing futures - we wish them continued success in the next phase of their aca demic careers.” Education is a cornerstone of Geor- gia-Pacific’s community investment. Across the country, the company supports a wide array of community- based educational programs includ ing ones that boost literacy, inspire children to pursue STEAM fields and train educators so they can take their skills to the next level. If she is not teach ing a wellness class, she is walk ing a dog for a member or check ing in on them to say hello. “Natalie has already made an impact on our community, we’re so excited to see what she can do in this new role,” said Thorpe. Jay Dawson joined the team after years of engi neering experience making him a val ued addition to our team. Jay comes to Marsh’s Edge with previous experience as a hotel engi neering manager in the hospitality and tourism industry. He was respon sible for the day to day engineering operation for a top-rated resort. He has management experience super vising his team and ensuring that all guests were satisfied. “Jay has many years of experience to lead him to Marsh’s’ Edge.
